Margaret Schmitz, devoted mom, longtime Campbell Co. worker
Margaret R. Schmitz was a mother figure to more than her own five children.
She often fed and cared for the friends of her children, as well.
"When all of us kids were in high school, she was like everybody's mom. She was just the sweetest person you ever wanted to meet," said a daughter, Nancy Zumwalde of Cincinnati.
"We would have people stop at the house after school or on Sundays, and she always had enough food. She was the best cook in the entire world.
"It was amazing how even with the little money they had, we never wanted for anything."
Mrs. Schmitz, formerly of Newport, died Monday at Wesley Hall in Cincinnati. She was 74.
She raised her children in Newport, where she was born and reared, after marrying Paul Thomas Schmitz, her husband of 40 years.
Mr. Schmitz died in 1984.
Mrs. Schmitz was actively involved in the lives of her children, participating in the PTA for St. Vincent de Paul school in South Newport, where her children were educated, and attending her son's football games at Newport Catholic High School.
After her youngest child was enrolled in school, Mrs. Schmitz decided to go to work.
In the early 1970s, she took a job in the Campbell County circuit clerk's office, where she kept vital statistics records.
"Times were pretty tough with five children and dad the only one working," Ms. Zumwalde said.
"She liked the job, because the people were so friendly. She always said it was like an extended family."
In 1987, Mrs. Schmitz retired from her job after 15 years.
"In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She also was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and American Legion Auxiliary.
