Brenda Bezold, fought illness
Brenda Lee Stull Bezold was a fighter.
She fought for her son, who had a life-threatening seizure disorder that doctors could neither explain nor treat. The boy resumed a normal, healthy life after she found a specialist in New York who successfully treated his condition.
She fought for her brother, offering him strength and support when he was diagnosed with cancer more than a year ago.
And she fought for her own survival after she was diagnosed in January with end-stage multiple myeloma, a rare blood disorder. She withstood months of powerful chemotherapy treatments until her death at 1 a.m. Friday at Jewish Hospital in Kenwood. The Grants Lick woman was 40.
"She fought because she believed she had to be here for her kids and for her husband," said her sister, Debbie Hornsby of Cold Spring. "She said they needed her and she needed them and she did not want to give up."
Her oldest son, Ryan Bezold, required constant care beginning at the age of 5 because of a brain disorder that caused him to have frequent, severe seizures.
He did not respond to medication. Doctors in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Louisville could not identify the cause, so Mrs. Bezold turned to a New York neurologist who confirmed that Ryan's seizures were the result of abnormalities in the brain.
In eight hours of surgery in 1997, doctors removed parts of his brain that were dead or malfunctioning.
Today, Ryan is a healthy, 15-year-old sophomore at Campbell County High School.
Mrs. Bezold's struggle to help her son was typical, her sister said.
"She always dropped everything she was doing to help someone else."
When Mrs. Bezold was diagnosed with the blood disorder in January, she vowed to fight it. She never cried, her sister said, because she wanted to be strong for her family.
She found comfort in her faith in God.
