Young teacher Julie Kalker, gave to others
The teaching career, and the life, of Julie Anne Kalker were brief, but in the time she had, she gave much to others.
Miss Kalker, 23, of Edgewood, died Saturday at her home. She was a math teacher at McNicholas High School in Cincinnati.
Following graduation from Xavier University in 1997, Miss Kalker volunteered to teach for a year in a poor Catholic parish school in Uvalde, Texas. "She felt she owed something for all of the blessings she had enjoyed," said her father, Jack Kalker of Edgewood.
Miss Kalker came home in 1998, and obtained a teaching job at McNicholas, in the Mount Washington area of Cincinnati.
She was diagnosed with lymphoma last July, and was only able to teach for about two months of the fall term at McNicholas, her father said.
"She fought it for a year. She never gave up," he said.
Miss Kalker was a graduate of Villa Madonna Academy in Villa Hills, where she played volleyball. She received a scholarship to Xavier University, and was in the honors program there, Jack Kalker said.
"She touched a lot of people and she was blessed with having many friends," said her father.
Other survivors include her mother, Jeanine Broering Kalker of Edgewood; a brother, John Kalker of Cincinnati; sisters, Lisa Raisbeck of Taylor Mill and Susan Kalker of Latonia; grandparents, Gertrude Broering of Crestview Hills and John "Bud" Kalker of Taylor Mill.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 tonight at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:15 p.m. at the church. Burial will be Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Julie Ann Kalker Xavier University Scholarship Fund, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio 45207; or the charity of the donor's choice. Kline Barnes, 81, of Bellevue, died Friday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a maintenance man with Washington Apartments, Bellevue, and a member of St. Anthony Church, Bellevue.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Barnes; a son, James Barnes of Nashville, Tenn.; daughters, Judy Brockman and Lois Foster, both of Florence; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Church. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Southgate.
Charles Ched Camarena, 39, of Loveland, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday in Cincinnati after being struck by a car on I-75 south near the Harrison Avenue exit. He was a color-code technician with Michelman Inc., Cincinnati, and a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow.
Survivors include a son, Justin Camarena of San Bernadino, Calif.; his mother and stepfather, Brenda and Larry Sipple of Independence; his father and stepmother, Raymond and April Camarena Sr. of Highland, Calif.; brothers, Raymond Camarena Jr. of Covington and Anthony Camarena of Ludlow; a stepbrother, Jody Sipple of Pikeville; a sister, Tonya Rejeck of Fort Mitchell; and grandparents, Dan and Betty Orta of Covington.

Lovell O. Campbell, 90, of Maysville, died at 10:35 a.m. Sunday at Maysville Extended Care Center. She was a spinner with January and Wood Co. in Maysville, and attended Maysville Church of the Nazarene. Her husband, Earl Campbell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a sister, Floral D. Fultz of Maysville.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Maysville.
Beverly Ann Turner Hoffman, 52, of Union, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was an administrative assistant with Barry, Bette and Led Duke Inc., Covington, and a member of First Baptist Church of Walton.
Survivors include her husband, Ken Hoffman; a daughter, Tara Fields of Florence; a son, Ken Hoffman Jr. of Crescent Springs; her mother, Violet Turner of Florence; brothers, Don Turner of Zephyrhills, Fla., Gary Turner of Rising Sun, Ind., and Raymond Turner of Independence; and one grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Walton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Gladys Elizabeth Kolhoven Johnson, 85, of Highland Heights, died at 3:28 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Edward Johnson, died in 1983.
Survivors include daughters, Gloria Riley of Southgate and Bonnie Pfeiffer of Cincinnati; a son, William Johnson of Fort Thomas; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

John William Krueger, 79, of Independence, died Saturday at Kings Daughters Hospital, Madison, Ind. He was a retired conductor with the L&N; Railroad, and a member of Bradford Masonic Lodge No. 123, Independence.
Survivors include his wife, Leota Combs Krueger; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Paula Elizabeth List, 39, of Florence, died at 11 a.m. Friday in a public parking lot in Florence. She was a factory worker with Gates Rubber Co., Florence.
Survivors include sons, Ryan J. List, Brennan P. List, Colton A. List and Kellen P. List, all of Independence; her father, Paul. J. Geil of Fort Wright; brothers, Dr. Kenneth P. Geil of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Dr. Jack Geil of Lexington, James Geil of Covington and Jerry Geil of Norwood, Ohio; and sisters, Kathleen Geil of Crestview Hills and Patsy Morgan of Taylor Mill.

Gerald David Litteral, 64, of Maysville, died at 1:20 p.m. Friday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mount Olivet. He was a self-employed architect.
Survivors include a sister, Norma Holden of Mesa, Ariz.

Lela Lucille Snider Meads, 95, of Brooksville, died at 9:33 a.m. Saturday. She was a retired nurse and a member of Central Baptist Church in Bryan, Texas. Her husband, Rufus Carroll Meads, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, William Carroll Meads of Abilene, Texas, and James A. Meads of Bryan; daughters, Jeanette Rychlik of Bryan and Beth Wren of Brooksville; brothers, J. W. Snider of Hubbard, Texas, and Leonard Snider, of Mount Calm, Texas; a sister, Juanita Goodman of Mexia, Texas; and 12 grandchildren.

William S. Peniston Sr., of Latonia, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington.
Charles W. Peoples, 77, of Butler, died Sunday at his home. He was a funeral director in Pendleton and southern Campbell County for more than 50 years, founded Peoples Funeral Home in Falmouth, and was owner of Peoples Funeral Homes in Falmouth, Butler and Grants Lick.
Mr. Peoples operated an ambulance service in the funeral home for many years, and was a member of American Legion Post No. 109, the Falmouth Lions Club, the Pendleton County Chamber of Commerce and the Pendleton County Country Club. He was a Coast Guard veteran. His first wife, Stella Pribble Peoples, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Trudy Peoples; sons, Charles F. Peoples of Butler and John Peoples of Falmouth; a stepson, Eric French of Cincinnati; a sister, Elsie Hyman of Cincinnati; six grandchildren, one step-grandson and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Reckers, 82, of Spartanburg, S.C., formerly of Latonia, died Saturday in Spartanburg.

Evelyn Ireton Smith, 83, of Williamstown, died at 9:35 p.m. Friday at Grant Manor Nursing Home in Williamstown.
She was a retired elementary school teacher with Greenhills-Forest Park school system in Cincinnati and Campbell County Schools.
She was a member of Williamstown Baptist Church, Williamstown Homemaker, Williamstown Woman's Club, the Super Seniors and BWC's of the Williamstown Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Rich of Williamstown; a son, Daniel Smith of Phoenix; a sister, Delores Martin of Cincinnati; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Barry A. Sowder, 43, of Corinth, died at 6:10 p.m. Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati, of a gunshot wound.
He was a farm worker.
Survivors include a daughter, Rachael Sowder of Glencoe; his mother, Viva D. Davis; his father and stepmother, Emerson K. "Pete" and Roberta Sowder of Williamstown; and sisters, Karen Fitzpatrick of Crittenden, Donna Lewis and Tina Jo Russell, both of Independence.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.
Anna M. Sparrow, 66, of Union, died at 6:11 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a bookkeeper with Park-Davis Co. and Herringer Chevrolet, both in Cincinnati. She was a member of Beaver Lick Baptist Church and the Florence chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin E. Sparrow; a stepson, Harry Sparrow of Union; and sisters, Jean Landrum of Crittenden and Irene Kees of Dry Ridge.

James Keith Zion, 58, of Bellevue, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a salesman with Finkleman Furniture, Newport, and a member of Prince of Peace Church, Bellevue.
He was a member of Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge No. 607 in Dayton, Covington Scottish Rite and Royal Arch of Fort Thomas. He also coached Pee-Wee football and volleyball.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Zion of Bellevue; daughters, Jana Wiersma of Denton, Texas, and Jill Zion of Bellevue; a son, Jason Zion of Elsmere; and two grandchildren.
