Myrtle Pompilio, devoted to family, Reds

Myrtle Mae Pompilio, a member of the family that founded Pompilio's Restaurant in Newport, died at 6:15 a.m. Monday at her home in Wilder.

Mrs. Pompilio's late husband, Daniel J. Pompilio, was a son of the founders of the restaurant, which opened in 1933 and is still going strong.

The Pompilios ran the restaurant until 1982, when the three sons, including Mrs. Pompilio's husband, retired and sold it.

A community landmark, Pompilio's gained national fame when used as a location for the Oscar-winning film "Rain Man."

Mrs. Pompilio, 76, was a homemaker and a member of the Over 55 Club at St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas. She was a former Girl Scout leader.

A son, Daniel J. Pompilio of Alexandria, said last year that his mother and father were childhood sweethearts who maintained lifelong friendships with a group of high school classmates.

After the friends retired, they formed a club and went bowling or to dinner, the younger Pompilio said last year.

The Pompilios lived in Newport until 1969, when they moved to Fort Thomas, and later to Wilder.

Mrs. Pompilio and her husband would go to Florida every year for Cincinnati Reds' spring training, and return for Opening Day.

Mr. Pompilio died in 1998.

In addition to her son, survivors include daughters, Sandra Crawford of Newport, Kathleen Eggerding of Cincinnati and Karen Gassmann of Fort Wright; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, with prayers following. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Campbell Lodge Boys Home, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

William "Moon" Branom Jr., 68, of Sanders, died Sunday at his home. He was a backhoe and bulldozer operator, a member of New Liberty Second Baptist Church, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include a son, Brian Shipley of Columbus, Ind.; daughters, Patricia McCroy of Peru, Ind., and Dorothy Perkins of Sanders; brothers, Lewis Branom of New Liberty and Gilbert Branom of Louisville; sisters, Margaret Steele of Columbus, Ohio, and Catherine Branom of Butlerville, Ind.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Liberty Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to New Liberty Second Baptist Church, New Liberty, Ky. 40355.

Charles Ched Camarena, 29, of Loveland, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday in Cincinnati after being struck by a car on I-75 South near the Harrison Avenue exit. He was a color-code technician with Michelman Inc., Cincinnati, and a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow.

Survivors include a son, Justin Camarena of San Bernadino, Calif.; his mother and stepfather, Brenda and Larry Sipple of Independence; his father and stepmother, Raymond and April Camarena Sr. of Highland, Calif.; brothers, Raymond Camarena Jr. of Covington and Anthony Camarena of Ludlow; a stepbrother, Jody Sipple of Pikeville; a sister, Tonya Rejeck of Fort Mitchell; and grandparents, Dan and Betty Orta of Covington.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sts. Boniface and James Church. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 721 W. Main St., Louisville, Ky. 40202. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Evelyn Durr, 78, of Latonia, died at 11:30 a.m., Monday, at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home in Latonia. She was a retired clerk with Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. and a member of St. Mark United Church of Christ, Latonia. She was a volunteer with St. Elizabeth Medical Centers. Her husband, James Mullins Durr, died in 1966. Survivors include a daughter, Joyce A. Wright of Edgewood; a sister, Anna Margaret Mason of Albuquerque, N.M.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m., Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Children's Hospital Medical Center, Starshine Hospice, 3333 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

Blanche Leek Farrell, 92, of Verona, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Carl Leek of Verona and Tommy Leek of Warsaw; a daughter, Alice Lustenberg of Verona; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.

Arthur W. Fausz Jr., 61, of Newport, died Wednesday at home. He was a retired driver with Covington Yellow Cab Co.

Survivors include sons, Thomas Fausz of Belvedere, S.C., and Arthur Fausz of Lithia Springs, Ga.; a daughter, Linda Orozco of Pasco, Wash.; sisters, Betty Fausz of Chicago, Louise Fausz of Arizona, and Helen Fausz and Thresea Fausz, both of Newport; brothers, Thomas Fausz of Covington and David Fausz of Independence; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were at noon at Radel Funeral Home, Newport.

Homer J. Glass, 77, of Kenton County, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. Arrangements are pending at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Erlanger-Elsmere.

Joseph A. Goines, 73, of Highland Heights, died at 11:40 p.m., Sunday, at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Trauth of Alexandria; and a brother, Irvin Goines of Butler.

Graveside services will be at 9 a.m., Wednesday, at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Anthony "Pete" Greene, 18, of Newport, died Wednesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He graduated from Newport High School in June, and had planned to attend Northern Kentucky University in the fall. He was captain of the high school's basketball team.

Survivors include his mother, Vanessa Greene of Newport; sisters, Annetra Green, Andrea Greene and Angelique Greene, all of Newport; and his grandmother, Marcia Stonestreet of Covington. Services will be at 7 tonight at Newport High School. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Burial will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Veronica J. Niehaus Hieber, 83, of York, Pa., formerly of Fort Thomas and Cold Spring, died Sunday at Manor Care Health Services in York. She was a secretary with Bache & Co., Cincinnati, and a member of St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring, the Fort Thomas Women's Club and Highland Country Club. She was a former coach of the Mighty Mite Bowling League for Glen Schmidt's Bowling Lanes. Her husband, John H. Hieber, and a daughter, Harriet Hieber, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, J. Elaine Hieber of Ames, Iowa; a son, J. Stephen Hieber of York, Pa.; sisters, Agnes Hoppenjans and Margaret Puttman, both of Fort Mitchell; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research, 924 N. Colonial Ave., York, Pa. 17403.

Paul Henry Meyers Sr., 71, of Southgate, died at 6:20 a.m., Monday, at Bethesda Northern Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was a retired ice cream maker with French Bauer Dairy in Cincinnati, and co-founder of the Southgate Volunteer Fire Life Squad. He was a member of the Lionel Collectors Club of America, the Queen City Umpires Association and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Meyers; sons, Paul H. Meyers Jr. of Dayton, Richard L. Meyers of Southgate, Patrick G. Meyers of Crestview, Gregory V. Meyers and Michael K. Meyers, both of Highland Heights; a brother, Thomas L. Meyers of Cincinnati; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Lola Louise Moore, 91, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas. She was a bookkeeper with Victor H. Brown & Sons Co.

Survivors include daughters, Carole Brown of Cold Spring and Lois Reeves of Bellevue; a son, Thomas Moore of Highland Heights; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m., Thursday.1

William S. Peniston Sr., 62, of Latonia, died at 8:49 p.m., Saturday, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired employee of Kentucky Motor Parts and an office manager with Harrison Terminal. He was a member of Elmwood, Ohio, Eagles, and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Angela Peniston; daughters, Kimberly Vaughn of Cincinnati, Marian Hazel of Southgate, Teresa McGuire of Independence and Pamela DiLillo of Latonia; sons, William S. Peniston Jr. of Turner Station, Donald Peniston of Covington, and Charles Peniston, Ronald Peniston and Thomas Peniston, all of Latonia; a brother, Paul Peniston of Brandon, Fla.; sisters, Alice M. Rathburn of Houston and Mary E. Peniston of Fort Mitchell; and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m., Thursday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Mary Frances Reckers, 82, of Boiling Springs, S.C., formerly of Latonia, died at 3:45 p.m., Saturday, at White Oak Manor, Spartanburg, S.C. Her husband, Charles Reckers, died in 1966.

Survivors include a son, Don Reckers of Spartanburg; a daughter, Kay Ahr of Littleton, Colo.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to New Vision Baptist Church, 820 Bill Lattimore Road, Chesnee, S.C. 29323.

Hugh Robinson, 63, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Violet Marshall Sosbe, 92, of Latonia, died at 8:36 a.m., Monday, at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home in Latonia. She was a homemaker and a youth Sunday school teacher at First Evangelical Methodist Church, Latonia. Her husbands, Raymond J. Cooke, Ernie Lawson and Joseph Sosbe, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include a brother, Lowell Marshall of Memphis, Tenn.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to First Evangelical Methodist Church, 3820 Decoursey Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015.

John Vernon Strasinger, 78, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died Monday at Riverview Nursing Community in Cincinnati.

He was a manufacturing engineer with General Electric and a member of Robert Burns Masonic Lodge No. 163, Newport, Scottish Rite of Covington and Shriners of Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Nannie Strasinger; daughters, Shirley Beasley and Phyllis Black, both of Cincinnati, Dawn Martin of Palmetto, Fla., and Nancy Viox of Erlanger; a sister, Emma Miler of Gibsonville, N.C.; a brother, David Strasinger of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Ula Marion Tanner, 94, of Independence, died Monday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Robert Tarbeck, 79, of Pikeville, died at 2 a.m., Friday, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital. He was a sports announcer, broadcasting Pikeville High School and Pikeville College athletics for many years with radio station WPKE. He was a member of the Pikeville First Christian Church and the Pikeville Jaycees, and was a World War II veteran.

His wife, Virginia Day Tarbeck, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a sister, Betty Duermann of Crestview Hills.

Services were Sunday in Pikeville.

Burial was in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville.

Robert Woodruff, 74, of Maysville, died Monday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was a retired farmer and an Army veteran of World War II.

His wife, Florence Woodruff, died in 1996.

Survivors include daughters, Roberta Tucker of Germantown, Ramona Lathem of Brooksville and Dorothy McDonald of North Port, N.Y.; sons, Robert F. Woodruff of Florence, Roy Woodruff and Ronald Woodruff, both of Maysville, and Richard Meyers of Lewis County; brothers, Albert Woodruff of Cynthiana, Roy Woodruff and Jim Woodruff, both of Brooksville; sisters, Josie Poe of Brooksville and Marie Tull of Ripley, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery, Bracken County.
