Dayton's George Messman, 'great dad,' hardware clerk
When George Alphonse Messman made a commitment, he stuck by it.
The Dayton man worked for 43 years as a sales clerk with Klingenbergs Hardware.
He was married
for 53 years until his wife's death in 1996.
He was an active member of St. Bernard Church in Dayton for more than 35 years.
Mr. Messman died at 2:16 p.m. Tuesday at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati. He was 80.
"He was a great dad, a good friend to many people and a hard worker," said a daughter, Mary C. Messman of Cincinnati.
Mr. Messman rarely missed a day of work at Klingenbergs, except when he took time off to serve in the Army during World War II.
When he returned, he and wife, Mary Margaret Kramer Messman, had eight children. To support his large family, he did household repairs and remodeling in addition to his work at Klingenbergs.
"I think my dad was born a hardware clerk," Mary Messman said. "He could fix anything."
In retirement, Mr. Messman enjoyed participating in the church's social group, called the Chaperone Club. People were attracted to him for his friendliness and sense of humor, his daughter said.
Other survivors include daughters, Judy Barrowman of Arnold, Md., and Ginna Scully of Dayton; sons, George Messman of Lafayette County, Jim Messman of Taylor Mill, John Messman of Arlington, Va., Ray Messman of Bellevue and Frank Messman of Dayton; a sister, Angela Tolle of Florence; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas.
Sister Mary Borromeo, S.N.D., (Esther E. Rumpke), 86, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Joseph Heights, Covington.
Sister Borromeo entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Covington in 1930. She made her first vows in 1932 and her final vows in 1938 in Covington.
She taught at St. John School in Covington for 14 years. She also was provincial secretary to Sister Mary Joseph and directress for the junior professed sisters. She was assistant to two Superior Generals in Rome, and from 1959 to 1971 she served as provincial superior in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Province, Covington.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Clare Rumpke and Helen Hinterlong, both of Cincinnati; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Friday at the Provincial House, St. Joseph Heights, Covington, where a Wake Service will begin at 5 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Heights.
Middendorf-Bullock, Covington is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame, 1601 Dixie Highway, Covington.
Wilma L. Bowlds, 71, of Southgate, died Tuesday at her home. She was a switchboard operator with Drawbridge Estates, Fort Mitchell, and a past president of the Kentucky Women's Democratic Club. She was an executive of the Campbell County Women's Democratic Club and a regional director of the National Federation of Democratic Women.
Survivors include a son, Terry B. Bowlds of Taylor Mill; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Robert J. Canfield, 82, of Erlanger, died at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired switchman with Southern Railroad.
Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Barnes Canfield; a son, Darryl W. Canfield of Erlanger; a daughter, Pamela E. McPartlin and Beverly D. Fulweiler, both of Erlanger; a brother, Frank M. Canfield of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Helen Canfield of Covington; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were this morning at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Richard J. Doyen, 34, of Dayton, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a plumber with Capitol Plumbing Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Doyen; sons, Andrew Doyen, Zachary Doyen and Shawn Doyen, all of Dayton; his parents, Paul Doyen of Florence and Patricia Doyen of Fort Thomas; brothers, Scott Doyen and Roger Lyons, both of Fort Thomas, Kevin Doyen of Florida, Paul Doyen of Burlington and Earl Doyen of Dayton; sisters, Kelly Doyen of Covington, Tracy John of Fort Thomas and Raquel Lyons of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.
Marcella C. Shoemaker Harris, 93, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center, Fort Wright.

Jean Ruth Miceli, 68, of Elsmere, died at 12:16 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a licensed practical nurse. Her first husband, Edward Dirkes, died in 1957. Her second husband, Paul E. Miceli, died in 1986. A daughter, Susan Dirkes, died in 1973.
Survivors include daughters, Bonnie Kinsella of Florence and Paula Blick of Union; sons, Steve Dirkes of Union and Paul Miceli of Florence; and eight grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial was in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, handled arrangements.
Kathy Ann McDade Schierer, 39, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died July 23 at her home. She was a clerk with the Internal Revenue Service in Covington and Cincinnati.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Schierer; children, A.J. Schierer and Brandon Schierer, both at home; her parents, James and Shirley McDade of Cincinnati; a brother, David McDade of Cincinnati; and a sisters, Kim Collins of Cincinnati.

Mikayla Renee Stamper, 5 months, of Newport, died Wednesday at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her parents, Willie and Tracy Stamper of Newport; sisters, Rachel Stuttler and Jessica Stuttler, both of Newport; grandparents, Willie and Debbie Stamper of Southgate, Mich., and Ron and Linda Williams of Newport.

Dorothy VanHuss, 74, of Latonia, died at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday at her home.
