Robert Brown's leadership touched family, activities
Whether leading young scouts, coaching adult women in softball or putting in long hours to pay for his children's education, Robert E. "Bob" Brown managed to bring zest and dedication to each endeavor.
Mr. Brown was originally from Westwood in Cincinnati but settled into Fort Thomas after serving in the Army during World War II.
After the war, Mr. Brown founded a scout troop at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Fort Thomas, said a son, Michael Brown of Fort Thomas.
"He had an excellent sense of humor. He was a bridge player and a golfer," Michael Brown said of his father.
"He was a very soft-spoken, proud, quiet man, until you stepped out of line. He could freeze 35 boys in their tracks with just a look."
Mr. Brown, 79, of Fort Thomas, died at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport.
He was a lithographer for Gibson Greeting Cards in Cincinnati. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Fort Thomas, where he was also a member of Holy Name Society.
Mr. Brown was member of the Newport Catholic Boosters and coached Little League baseball teams. He was very proud of his softball team, "Brownies Bunch," which won numerous championships.
He also was a volunteer at the Parish Kitchen in Covington.
Mr. Brown expected his sons to be leaders in their scout troop, his son said. Mr. Brown was married
to Margaret Ann "Peg" Brown, for 58 years.
"He touched a lot of people through the years," Michael Brown said of his father.
Mr. Brown also leaves another son Stevan Brown of Crestview; daughters, Sheila Jones, Karen Hasson and Amy Vories, all of Fort Thomas, Bonnie Wallenhorst of Southgate, and Judy McMahon of Florence; a sister, Kay Myers of Cincinnati; 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. The family will receive friends following the Mass in the church undercroft. Mr. Brown's donated his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to Parish Kitchen, P. O. Box 1234, Covington, Ky., 41012-1234.
Clara Beasley, 90, of Fort Wright, died at 7 p.m. Thursday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Don Catchen & Son Funeral Home, Elsmere/Erlanger.
Virginia Baker Braun, 77, of Fort Mitchell, died at 3 a.m. today at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospice, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Robert J. Canfield, 82, of Erlanger, died at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired switchman with Southern Railroad.
Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Barnes Canfield; a son, Darryl W. Canfield of Erlanger; a daughter, Pamela E. McPartlin and Beverly D. Fulweiler, both of Erlanger; a brother, Frank M. Canfield of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Helen Canfield of Covington; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were Friday morning at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky., 41014.
Richard J. Doyen, 34, of Dayton, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a plumber with Capitol Plumbing Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Doyen; sons, Andrew Doyen, Zachary Doyen and Shawn Doyen, all of Dayton; his parents, Paul Doyen of Florence and Patricia Doyen of Fort Thomas; brothers, Scott Doyen and Roger Lyons, both of Fort Thomas, Kevin Doyen of Florida, Paul Doyen of Burlington and Earl Doyen of Dayton; sisters, Kelly Doyen of Covington, Tracy John of Fort Thomas and Raquel Lyons of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation began at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.
Ernst A. Heister, 82, formerly of Bellevue, died July 4 at Newberg Care Home in Newberg, Ore. He was a retired Air Force colonel and a veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retiring from the Air Force in 1970, he worked for Civil Engineering Naval Corps in Spain and in Thailand.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Podgornoff Heister of Salem, Ore.; sons, Richard Heister of Montclair, Calif., Michael Heister of Sussun, Calif., Jaochim Heister of Forest Grove, Ore., and Daniel Heister of Newberg, Ore.; daughters, Kathleen Shipp of Phoenix, and Sandra Castro of Salem, Ore.; brothers, Robert Heister of Manlius, N.Y., and Richard Heister of Cold Spring; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held today at St. Peter's Church, Newberg, Ore. Burial was in Willamette National cemetery in Oregon. Attrell Funeral Home, Newberg, Ore., handled arrangements.
George Alphonse Messman, 80, of Dayton, died at 2:16 p.m. Tuesday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a sales clerk for Klingenberg's Hardware and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Mary Margaret Kramer Messman, died in 1996.
Survivors include daughters, Judy Barrowman of Arnold, Md., Ginna Scully of Dayton and Mary C. Messman of Cincinnati; sons, George Messman of Lafayette County, Jim Messman of Taylor Mill, John Messman of Arlington, Va., Ray Messman of Bellevue and Frank Messman of Dayton; a sister, Angela Tolle of Florence; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas.
Jean Ruth Miceli, 68, of Elsmere, died at 12:16 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a licensed practical nurse. Her first husband, Edward Dirkes, died in 1957. Her second husband, Paul E. Miceli, died in 1986. A daughter, Susan Dirkes, died in 1973.
Survivors include daughters, Bonnie Kinsella of Florence and Paula Blick of Union; sons, Steve Dirkes of Union and Paul Miceli of Florence; and eight grandchildren.
Services were today at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial was in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, handled arrangements.
James Edward Reilly, 5, of Butler, died in an early-morning apartment fire Wednesday in Butler, along with his 2-year-old brother, Bradley Scott Tiryung.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Michelle and Eric Tiryung of Butler; his father, Tony Miller of Bowling Green; and grandparents, Tom and Janice Reilly of Butler and Phyllis Griffin of Bellevue.

Mikayla Renee Stamper, 5 months, of Newport, died Wednesday at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her parents, Willie and Tracy Stamper of Newport; sisters, Rachel Stuttler and Jessica Stuttler, both of Newport; grandparents, Willie and Debbie Stamper of Southgate, Mich., and Ron and Linda Williams of Newport; and great-grandparents, Mildred Schout of Newport, John F. Bailey of Newport, and Al and Dorothy Williams of Heber Springs, Ark.

Larry R. Sweeney, 51, of Newport, died Wednesday at his residence. He was the laundry department foreman at the former Booth Hospital and a volunteer worker for 15 years for the Independent Group for the Tri-County.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Horne Sweeney; a stepson, Tommy of Florence; sisters, June Fugate of Newport, Ann Lukie of Independence, and Carol Strunk of Alexandria; and a brother, Melvin Sweeney of Fort Knox.

Bradley Scott Tiryung, 2, of Butler, died in an early-morning apartment fire Wednesday in Butler, along with his 5-year-old brother, James Edward Reilly.
Survivors include his parents, Eric and Michelle Tiryung of Butler; and grandparents, Tom and Janice Reilly of Butler and Phyllis Griffin of Bellevue.

Dorothy L. Van Huss, 74, of Latonia, died at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday at the Colony retirement home in Latonia. She was a retired secretary for Rusk Heating and Air Conditioning and a member of Taylor Mill Church of Christ. She was a volunteer with the Red Cross during World War II, a volunteer with the USO and a former den mother for the Cub Scouts.
Survivors include sons, Michael P. Van Huss of Milford, Ohio, Randall L. Van Huss of Covington and Thomas A. Van Huss of Covington; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at Taylor Mill Church of Christ. Mrs. Huss donated her body was donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
