Bennie Merrill, athlete, proud veteran
Bennie Merrill of Robertson County, a former supervisor of Dubois Chemical and a lifelong sports enthusiast, died Sunday at the Maysville Extended Care Facility. He was 86.
Mr. Merrill lettered in four sports at Deming High School in the 1930s - basketball, football, baseball and track. Decades later he was winning statewide recognition in the Senior Olympics, where he received several Governor's awards as a pace-setter. One year he was honored for walking more than 1,000 miles in a year, said his niece, Kathryn Jane Merrill of Maysville.
Mr. Merrill was a World War II Army veteran who served in Europe and later in the Philippine Islands.
"He was a very proud veteran. He was a patriot," said his great-nephew, Ryan White of Robertson County. "I spent the summer staying with him a year and a half ago," said Ryan, 14. "He was very considerate of people. He would do anything to help somebody out."
Miss Merrill said her uncle had a strong love for his country. "Not too long ago he told me 'If anything happened, I'd go back (in the Army),' " she said. He met her double-take with his customary wit: "I could peel potatoes," he said.
"He was a really super guy," Miss Merrill said. "He was fun-loving and sweet and kind. I don't think there was a person that he didn't like."
He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge 291 since 1940 and attended lodge functions in 18 states and two foreign countries. He was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge 333, a member of New Hope Christian Church and had been named a Kentucky Colonel.
After he retired from Dubois in 1978, he and his wife, Rosalie, spent winters in Texas and later in Florida. She died more than a decade ago.
Mr. Merrill lived most of his life in Robertson County and was often seen out walking for miles at a time. He moved to the Maysville Extended Care Facility a little more than a year ago.
