'Vibrant' teacher Cindy Schaub, fought cancer

Cindy L. Schaub, whose need for a bone-marrow transplant became a public controversy last year when the state refused to allow her brother to leave jail to be her donor, died at 10:46 a.m. Tuesday at University Hospital in Cincinnati.

The Crescent Springs resident was 44.

Mrs. Schaub was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer in May 1996. Doctors told her she had three to five years to live, unless she chose to fight the cancer with expensive and painful treatments. She chose to fight.

Chemotherapy, a transfusion of her own stem cells and a bone-marrow transplant with her younger brother Rick Wienecke as the donor did not stop the spread of the cancer.

Late last year, doctors told her she was in need of another bone-marrow transplant to survive. Wienecke was the only match.

But Wienecke has been confined at the Roederer Correctional Complex in LaGrange, where he is serving a 12-year sentence for the robbery of two Covington gas stations.

Kentucky officials said they could not allow Wienecke to leave the state for the procedure at the Cancer Research Center in Arkansas because they would lose jurisdiction over him when he crossed the state line.

Mrs. Schaub's family contacted state legislators, who worked out an arrangement with state corrections officials allowing Wienecke to donate his bone marrow cells at University of Louisville Hospital, then have the cells shipped to Arkansas.

On April 19, Mrs. Schaub received the first transfusion. It was successful, and she was scheduled to have another transfusion Tuesday.

But she tripped on a cord in the darkness of her mother's home early Tuesday morning and died of a brain hemorrhage several hours later, her mother, Gerri Wienecke of Erlanger, said.

"We thought we had whipped it. . . and then this," Mrs. Wienecke said.

"She fought a tough life."

"We were almost there. But God wanted her."

Mrs. Schaub grew up in Covington and graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills.

She worked at the Internal Revenue Service for 10 years while going to night school at Northern Kentucky University, where she graduated in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in education. She taught special education at Campbell County schools, and then at R.A. Jones Middle School in Florence, until she had to quit in 1996 because of the pain from her cancer.

She was diagnosed with the cancer about a year after she married her second husband, Robert Schaub Jr.

"She was vibrant, bubbly, and she never, ever held a grudge on anybody," her mother said.

"She was very forgiving. Her main goal in life was to become a teacher, and she did, for about a year."
