Martha Hamilton, owned restaurants
Martha "Madeline" Zaring Hamilton, owner of a Florence trailer park and the former owner of Southern Trails and Betsy Anne restaurants, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
She was 83.
Ms. Hamilton owned several night clubs and restaurants in her lifetime. Her first establishment was the Little Apple, a restaurant and bar she operated in her hometown of Little York, Ind.
After she moved to Alexandria in the 1950s, she opened another restaurant and dance hall called the Alps Club. She also owned an Alexandria restaurant called the Betsy Anne.
Her other restaurant, Southern Trails, was in Florence, where she lived for the last 40 years.
Ms. Hamilton enjoyed cooking for her restaurants, as well as managing them, said her brother, George Zaring of Salem, Ind.
She had enormous amounts of energy, he said, and she was very generous with her customers, staff and family.
"If she had been given the money that everybody owes her, she would have been very wealthy," Zaring said. "She did a lot of favors for a lot of people, and she really didn't ask for any of it in return."
Ms. Hamilton's other business, the Hamilton Trailer Court in Florence, is her only remaining establishment today. The 20-lot trailer park sits on four acres that she purchased about 40 years ago.
Ms. Hamilton was devoted to her
seven grandchildren, her brother said. She also loved music and traveling.
