Vernon Lee Beach, expert landscaper
Vernon Lee Beach could identify almost any tree, flower or plant.
A landscaper for more than 25 years at Dixie View Nursery in Florence, Mr. Beach accumulated a wealth of knowledge about plants and gardens.
His own yard, filled with flowers and vegetables, was lovingly tended.
Mr. Beach, of Warsaw, died Thursday at his home. He was 77.
"He was so intelligent, he could tell you the name of any shrub, every tree and flower and how to take care of them," said a daughter, Anna Maxwell of Morning View.
"He loved wrestling, fishing, hunting and his beagles. He also loved to plant seeds."
Unable to drive, Mr. Beach used to walk to work at the nursery every day from his Florence home. In the mid-1970s, he switched jobs and moved his family to Covington, where he worked as a painter for Stewart Iron Works Co. for about 12 years.
He and his wife, Harrie Earlene Beach, had six children. After her death in February 1991, he returned to Warsaw, where he grew up.
He loved tending his garden, his daughter said. He planted roses and vegetables.
