Joseph Gampfer, carpenter, family man
Joseph W. Gampfer, a longtime carpenter who helped build hospitals, schools and houses with his hands and built a home with his heart, died Saturday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was 83.
Mr. Gampfer, of Alexandria, was a member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Union Local No. 698, Cincinnati. He worked for Brose Construction Co. and Smith & Schaefer Co., both in Cincinnati.
"He was a masterful man in his trade," said his daughter, Charlene Gampfer of Alexandria. "He could do anything with wood."
He took pride in his craft and in his family. But it was a quiet pride.
"He didn't look for recognition. He wasn't one to brag or boast," his daughter said. "He was a humble man. I never saw him display any elements of envy or jealousy," she said.
"He was very diligent and precise, and he had old-fashioned values. When he walked into a room, he took his hat off if there were ladies present. He believed in commitment and honesty," she said.
"And he was relentless in his love and care and devotion to the true love of his life - my mom. He would do anything for my mom and me."
When his daughter was growing up, he took her fishing and camping. "Anytime I showed an interest in anything, he'd cultivate it."
She shared his love of dogs and animals.
He and his wife lived in Grants Lick until five years ago, when his daughter persuaded them to share a house in Alexandria.
He had a warm sense of humor and delighted in the daily pleasures of life. The Gampfers celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary last year sitting in their Alexandria yard near a big sign urging motorists to honk for their celebration.
Mr. Gampfer's health had started to fail in the last few months. He was hospitalized this week.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife, Harriet Peters Gampfer; and a brother, Carroll Gampfer of Cold Spring.
