Elmer 'Ep' Hall, agent for jockeys, loved track
Elmer "Ep" Hall was too tall to be a jockey, so he did the next best thing: He became a jockeys' agent.
Mr. Hall, 84, of Latonia, who made a career of working at horse tracks from Kentucky to New Orleans, died at 3:54 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
"From the time he was a little boy, he had the race track in his blood," said his daughter, Donna Clapp of Bellevue.
Mr. Hall would have loved to have been a jockey, but at 6-foot-1 that wasn't an option. So he took every job he could to be around the horses and the track, she said.
One of those jobs was jockeys' agent. Among his clients was Donny Brumfield, who rode Kauai King to victory in the 1966 Kentucky Derby.
He followed the race circuit, representing jockeys and working in the mutual departments of race tracks across the country. Most of his work was at tracks in Lexington, Louisville, Ohio, Arkansas and New Orleans.
Northern Kentucky was his home base. Sometimes he would be away from the family for weeks at a time. Other times the family would travel with him. In the 1950s, his children would go to school in Northern Kentucky in the fall and spring and transfer to schools in New Orleans in the winter.
"We met some wonderful people that are still good friends," said Mrs. Clapp.
Mr. Hall collected race-track memorabilia, she said. In his later years he traded memorabilia with fellow collectors from around the world.
He also collected friends.
"When we were growing up, we had company at our house all the time," she said. "We didn't have a big house, but there was always room."
Mr. Hall had been a baseball and softball player as a young man and managed a ball team for River Downs one year, his daughter said.
He was in the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. He also was a member of the Jockey Benevolent Association, the Democratic Club of Kenton County, West Covington Boosters Club, and a for mer member of the Sunday Morning Club of Kenton County.
Mr. Hall stopped traveling around 1988 and settled in West Covington, working at River Downs Race Course in Cincinnati in the mutuel and payroll departments. He retired last year.
His wife, Genny Oder Hall, died in 1992.
Mr. Hall's health started to fail and he moved to Rosedale Manor more than a year ago, but he continued to work at River Downs until last year.
