Henrietta M. Sprankel, Covington crossing guard
For 40 years, Henrietta M. Sprankel got up early in the morning to make sure children in Covington made it across the streets safely.
Mrs. Sprankel worked as a school crossing guard for the city of Covington - 35 of those years at St. John's, later called Prince of Peace School.
Mrs. Sprankel, 83, of Covington, died at 8:20 a.m. Thursday at her son's residence in Hebron.
When her duties as a crossing guard ended, Mrs. Sprankel stayed at the school and volunteered for just about everything else.
"She liked being with the children," said her son, David Sprankel of Hebron.
"She helped in the library. She helped in the cafeteria. She helped with the festivals. If I didn't know better, I think she helped teach sometimes. She just did a lot for the kids. She spent her whole day down there."
Mrs. Sprankel, who retired about three years ago, was a dedicated school crossing guard, rarely missing a day.
"She just loved it," Mr. Sprankel said.
"She was 80 years old, still getting up at 6 a.m. in the winter."
Mrs. Sprankel also enjoyed bingo, and she loved being around her grandchildren.
She was a member of St. John Church, Covington. Her husband, Alvin, died in 1973.
In addition to her son, survivors include another son, Ralph Ashley of Dayton, Ohio; a daughter, Lana Daut of Richwood; a brother, Robert Trenkamp of Edgewood; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Thurman Cantrill, 92, of Covington, died at 8 a.m. Friday at Garrard Convalescent Home, Covington. He was a retired truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell Cantrill; a stepdaughter, Joyce Hawkins of Fort Thomas; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Helen J. Conley, 79, of Newport, died at 4:49 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a retired machine operator for Equity Bag, Florence. Her husband, George Hayes Conley, died in 1987.
Survivors include sons, George H. Conley Jr. of Amelia, Ohio, Charles W. Conley of Dry Ridge, Harold E. Conley of Dayton and Stevie D. Conley of Fort Mitchell; daughters, Joyce A. Henson of Quinlan, Texas, Betty Lou Sizemore of Corbin and Donna M. Clark of Newport; 26 grandchildren and 36 great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Naaman Ray Cook, 65, of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He formerly worked for Celotex and Magna Machine, both of Cincinnati, and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Dry Ridge.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Howard Cook; sons, Richard Cook of Mount Zion and Kerry Cook of Williamstown; daughters, Barbara Kennedy of Elsmere, Brenda Rose of Dry Ridge, Mary Florence Dryer of Georgetown and Donna Glass of Mount Zion; a sister, Joyce Anderson of Union; 12 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Karl Fieger, 47, of Latonia, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Anna Mae S. Fischer, 88, of Savannah, Ga., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Thursday at Memorial Medical Center, Savannah. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Savannah.
Survivors include sons, Thomas Fischer of Savannah and James Fischer of Poway, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jane Adams Houston, 73, of Elsmere, died at 6 a.m. Friday at her residence. She was a retired secretary for Ohmart Corp., Cincinnati, and formerly was a secretary for Husky-Bundy Corp., Cincinnati. Her husband, Donald E. Houston, died in 1991.
Survivors include a brother, Aaron A. Adams of Erlanger.

Lee H. Having Kiely, 88, of Fort Mitchell, died Thursday at Woodspoint Care Center, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, where she was a member of the Ladies Society and Senior Citizens. Her husband, Francis J. Kiely, preceded her in death.

Selma Klein, 64, of Bellevue, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a telephone operator for Cincinnati Bell, a Girl Scout troop leader, and a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Dayton, Daughters of America, and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband, Donald Klein, died in 1986.

Joan E. Zierer Meyer, 68, of Highland Heights, died at 2:10 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Southgate Seniors. Her husband, John "Jack" Meyer, died in 1985.

Clinton Mitchell, 70, of Maysville, died at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a retired pipe and concrete installer for Brown County Construction, Brown County, Ohio, and a military veteran. A son, Sonny Mitchell, died in 1996.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Mitchell; a son, Michael Ray Mitchell of Rectorville; a daughter, Cyndy Bradford of Rectorville; brothers, R.B. Mitchell of Carlisle, Thomas Mitchell of Sardis and Billy Wayne Mitchell of Maysville; sisters, Jean Bradford and Geraldine Shepherd, both of Maysville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Velma Jean Smith, 46, of Butler, died Friday at The Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lee Roy Smith, died in 1995.

Elmer Gerald Thornberry Jr., 35, of Covington, died Friday at his residence. He was a machine adjuster for Premier Industries Inc., Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne York Thornberry; sons, Elmer Thornberry III, Cody Thornberry and Austin Thornberry, all at home; his father, Elmer G. Thornberry Sr.; his mother, Ruth Page; sisters, Wanda Grubbs, Inez Lambert, Cathy Manies, Rebecca Strube, Mary Thornberry and Linda Thornberry; and brothers, Thomas Thornberry, David Thornberry and Paul Thornberry.
