Dorothy Mae Beckner, business owner
When it came to operating a small business, Dorothy Mae Beckner was a survivor.
"The people in the bottoms were hurt by the floods, but she was among those who kept battling back," said former Dayton Mayor Gil Lynn.
Mrs. Beckner, 57, of Dayton, died Sunday at her residence.
She was the former owner and operator of several Dayton businesses - the Kenton Cafe, Rich and Dottie's Cafe, the Atlantic City Cafe, and R & D's Deli.
Mrs. Beckner and her second husband, Rich Adams, had Rich & Dottie's Cafe at Fourth Avenue and Clay Street, for about 10 years, until Dayton Urban Renewal bought them out. "It worked out well for everyone. They took over another place, when the owner was wanting to get out of business," said Lynn.
The Atlantic City Cafe, in the 900 block of Third Street, was named for a hobby both enjoyed, Adams said. "We both liked to gamble, and that was when gambling started in Atlantic City," he said.
The neighborhood tavern was also known for an annual Christmas party for youngsters. "We had 300 or 400 kids every Christmas. We were a little famous for that," said Adams.
More recently, he and Mrs. Beckner had operated the R & D Deli, on the curve of Mary Ingles Highway.
Dayton Council Member and former police officer Bobby Allen said he knew Mrs. Beckner since her childhood.
"She had a beautiful heart. She was one of the greatest persons I ever met. She loved all the kids," he said.
Mrs. Beckner's first husband, Lester Beckner, who was also involved with the operation of the Kenton Cafe, at Third Avenue and Kenton Street, preceded her in death.
Survivors also include sons, Dennis Beckner and Lester Beckner, both of Dayton, and Timothy Beckner of Butler; a daughter, Barbar a Jobe of Ludlow; stepsons, Charles Adams and Joseph Adams, both of Powder Springs, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
