Martha A. Fischer, banker, porcelain artist, club leader
Martha Allmoslechner Fischer could take the reins of any project and bring it home. And she usually did it with wit and zest.
Mrs. Fischer, 95, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community in Cincinnati.
Born just after the turn of the century, she was a successful businesswoman and the first female teller in the Cleveland District of the Federal Reserve Bank. She was secretary in the Cincinnati branch of the Federal Reserve for 43 years.
She was a porcelain artist and a bridge player. She loved opera and ocean fishing, and her travels included a passage through the Panama Canal.
She was a longtime member and past president of the 620 Women's Club of the Baker Hunt Foundation. The club was founded in 1932 as a social outlet for young professional women during the Great Depression. In 1973, she was named outstanding woman of the year by the club.
She also was a past matron of the Bristow Chapter No. 31 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
"She could take over anything and you didn't have to worry," said Martha Kaelin, who worked with Mrs. Fischer at the bank and had known her for more than 50 years.
"She had a wonderful sense of humor. She liked to be involved and doing things."
After her graduation from Newport High School, she worked with the Veterans' Bureau for a year and then for Becker's meats. She studied accounting at the University of Kentucky Northern Center and started her banking career.
She met her husband through the bank. Charles Edward Fischer was a bank examiner who came through town once. Mrs. Fischer, as an employee of the Federal Reserve, helped him meet a deadline.
Years later, widowed and retired, Charles Fischer came back to Cincinnati for a visit and got reacquainted with her. They married
when he was 84 and she was 70. It was her first marriage.
"After I met him, nobody else ever looked good to me," Mrs. Fischer said in an interview with The Post in 1990.
They traveled to Russia and through the Panama Canal.
"She was very witty, and he was witty, too," said a friend, Doris Perry. "They were very happy."
They lived in Park Hills and later Fort Mitchell before moving to an apartment at the Marjorie P. Lee retirement community.
"She got involved as soon as they moved there," Mrs. Kaelin said. "She was in charge of welcoming people. She'd show them around."
Her husband died in 1991.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Kathryn Farr of Newtown, Pa.; two step grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Burnett Braun, 91, of Newport, died at 3:45 a.m. Friday at Carmel Manor in Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Newport, where she was a deaconess; a former member of Newport School Board; first president of Newport High School PTA; and former president of the state Homemaker's Association.
Her husband, Harry J. Braun, died in 1967. Survivors include a son, Dr. Douglas K. Braun of Alexandria; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Wanda Castellini, 68, of Glendale, Ariz., formerly of Covington, died Thursday at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Phoenix.
She was a retired systems analyst for Honeywell.
Survivors include a sister, Roxie Stamper of Butler; and a brother, Charles Hall. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at National cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix. Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary, Glendale, Ariz., is handling arrangements.
Audrey Williams Caudill, 78, of Taylor Mill, died at 11:55 a.m. Friday at Florence Park Care Center.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
James Albert Cordes, 64, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was a manager for United Parcel Service and a member of Community Pentecostal Church, Taylor Mill.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Gillum Cordes; a daughter, Deborah Cordes Lynch of Quincy, Ill.; sons, Michael Cordes of Plainfield, Ohio, and Gregory Cordes of Newport; stepdaughters, Sheila Farris and Deborah Kahles, both of Cincinnati, Regina Stone of Independence, Pamela Chapman of Covington and Kimberly Harris of Elsmere; a stepson, Allen Chapman of Independence; a sister, Karen Rich of Florence; a brother, Thomas Cordes of Westland, Mich.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Solid Rock Assembly, Highway 15 North, Van Cleve, Ky. 41385.
Samuel P. Creech, 63, of Taylor Mill, died at 6 a.m. Friday at his residence.
He was a retired regional driver for Mason-Dixon Truck Lines, Cincinnati.
A son, Randall Creech, died in 1984. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Creech; sons, Samuel L. Creech of Oakley, Ohio, and William Daryl Creech of Erlanger; daughters, Rita K. McDermott of Independence, Deborah L. Carson of Norwood, Ohio, and Pamela S. Peterson of Ludlow; brothers, Larry Creech and Danny Creech, both of Butler; sisters, Betty Plowman of Manchester, Mich., and Freda Privett of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Peter F. Horn, 78, of Bellevue, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
He was a retired assembler for Lunkenheimer, Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Horn; sons, Dan Horn of Bellevue and Dave Horn of Independence; daughters, Mary Ann Kembre of Bellevue and Maureen Waters of Fort Thomas; brothers, Bob Horn of Latonia, Bud Horn of Cincinnati and Ed Horn of Holyoke, Mass.; a sister, Agnes Stein of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Whirles Jacobs, 45, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana.
She was a homemaker and a member of Oakwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Wayne Jacobs; sons, Scott Eliott Jacobs and Marty Ray Jacobs, both of Harrison County; her father, James Whirles of Cynthiana; a brother, Jimmy Whirles of Nicholas County; and a sister, Juanita Smith of Nicholas County.

Lester F. Klein, 81, of Dayton, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
He was a retired truck driver for Commercial Motor Freight Co. and a military veteran. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Dayton VFW Kirsten O'Day Post.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Entombment will be in St. Stephen cemetery Mausoleum, Fort Thomas.
Betty Ann Miller, 77, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a retired pantry chef with El Greco restaurant, Southgate, and a member of Latonia Christian Church. Her husband, Shirley Miller, died in 1996.
Survivors include daughters, Helen Scolf of Dayton, Linda Brown of Erlanger, Vicki Edwards, Sue Stines and Joanne Miller, all of Newport; sons, Larry Miller, Robbie Miller, Randy Miller and Terry Miller, all of Newport, and Allen Miller of Latonia; a sister, Amy Lee of Newport; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Patricia Ruth Steenken, 67, of Latonia, died at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a retired administrative assistant for St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a member of St. Benedict Church, Covington. Her husband, Patrick H. Steenken, died in 1998.
Survivors include sons, David P. Steenken of Tokyo, Japan, Mark J. Steenken of Latonia and Paul J. Steenken of Arlington, Va.; daughters, Theresa A. Furnish of Florence, M. Camille Mersch of Taylor Mill and Jane M. Proctor of Park Hills; sisters, Rosemary Nelson of Taylor Mill and Betty Wicker of Columbus, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Charlotte C. Wagner, 91, of Erlanger, died Thursday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere, where she was a member of the Altar Society, an auxiliary member of St. Ann's Knights of St. John and a volunteer at Madonna Manor, Villa Hills.
Her husband, Paul Wagner, and a son, Donald Wagner, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Paul E. Wagner and Roger Wagner, both of Erlanger; daughters, Carol Kremer of Cold Spring and Lynn Mahon of Cincinnati; a sister, Marie Wilson of the state of California; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Henry Church. Visitation will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
