Clarence E. Vance, ex-police officer
Clarence E. Vance was a former Bellevue police officer who enjoyed all aspects of his work.
Mr. Vance served during the 1960s, and he wasn't afraid to put his swimming techniques to use to rescue people, said his wife, Alice Vance.
"He was a diver. He could dive for people," Mrs. Vance said. "He enjoyed talking to people, and he liked fixing things."
Mr. Vance, 72, of Bellevue, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
In addition to being a police officer, Mr. Vance was a former self-employed contractor, and a maintenance supervisor for Holly Hill Children's Home in California. He was also a member of Robert Burns Masonic Lodge No. 163 in Newport, the Disabled American Veterans and AMVETS.
Mr. Vance served in the Army during World War II. He was born in Cincinnati and moved to Newport before settling down in Bellevue.
He enjoyed remodeling his house and doing yard work. He made lasting impressions on just about everyone who knew him, his wife said.
"He could be real gentle, but he could be real firm," Mrs. Vance said. "I know his nurses at the Disabled American Veterans loved him. He was a loving, kind, wonderful husband."
Other survivors include daughters, Deborah Johnson of Cincinnati and Sharon Mattox of Bellevue; sons, Harry Vance of Nashville, Tenn., and Randy Vance of Macon, Ga.; stepdaughter, Rhonda Bock of Bellevue; a brother, Raymond Vance of Largo, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Gretchen Marie Banks, 78, of Covington, died Wednesday at Bethesda Oak Hospital in Cincinnati. Survivors include daughters, Rita Davis of Batavia, Ohio, Betty Avery of Covington and Beatrice Banks of Greensboro, N.C.; brothers, Theodore Hon of Los Angeles and Junior Bismarck Hon of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, with visitation from 6 p.m. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere.
Fred Berning, 77, of Newport, died Thursday at his residence. He was a retired pressman for International Paper in Springdale, Ohio. A son, Tom Berning, died in 1970. Survivors include his wife, Delores Berning; sons, John Berning of Bellevue and Greg Berning of Melbourne; daughters, Mary Rininger of Bellevue, Debbie Sharp of Newport; a sister, Marie Gaddis of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Jeanne G. Gray, 74, of Fort Mitchell, died Wednesday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. She was a retired administrative assistant for United Way in Louisville and Cincinnati and a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park.
A son, Daniel Schlickman, died in 1963. Survivors include her husband, Francis G. "Ozzie" Gray; a daughter, Michelle Schwarte of Arlington, Texas; sons, Richard Schlickman of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Mark Schlickman of Louisville; sisters, Dorothy Courtney of Edgewood, Lucy Anglin of Petal, Miss.; seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Robert A. Holsclaw Sr., 53, of Florence, died Thursday at his residence. He was a retired letter carrier, a Vietnam War veteran, a member of the U.S. Postal Workers Union and First United Methodist Church, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Carlotta R. Holsclaw of Florence; a son, Robert A. Holsclaw Jr. of Florence; daughters, Sandy Kay Holsclaw, Deborah Denise Holsclaw and Heather Ann Holsclaw of Florence; his mother, Goldie Mae Holsclaw of Cincinnati; sisters, Linda Parker of Covington and Sheila Tucker of Morning View; and two grandchildren.

Retta "Nellie" Lee, 98, of Brooksville, died Thursday at Maysville Extended Care Facility in Maysville. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Gobel Lee, died in 1969. Sons Marvin Lee, George Lee and Charles Lee preceded her in death. Survivors include daughters, Geneva Wys of Michigan, Dorothy Thompson of Fort Wright, Mary Gillespie of Falmouth and Eva Doris Lenox, Loretta Sharp and Virginia White of Brooksville, and 30 grandchildren.

Catherine Mefford, 84, of Maysville, died Thursday at Vanceburg Rehabilitation Health Care Center. She was a retired twister for January and Wood Co., Maysville, and operated Limestone Grocery, Maysville.
Her husband, Carl W. Mefford, died in 1977. Survivors include brothers, John Bayless of Vanceburg and Charles Bayless of Maysville, and sisters, Oleath Penrod of Dover and Opal Witham of Aberdeen, Ohio.

Lorene Gilbert Mink, 83, of Williamstown, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County in Williamstown. She was a member of Williamstown Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and was in the choir and Baptist Women's Club.
Her husband, Cecil B. Mink, died in 1981. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Bennett of Florence; sons, Cecil "Buddy" Mink of Williamstown and Roby Lee Mink of Georgetown; brothers, Ted C. Gilbert of Lexington, James W. Gilbert of Cincinnati and Michael R. Gilbert of New Albany, Ind.; sisters, Opal Calvert and Jean G. Wright of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

J.C. Perkins, 88, of Williamstown, died Friday at his residence. He was a retired farmer and a deacon of Corinth Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Grace Fornash Perkins; a son, Glenn E. Perkins of Dry Ridge; a brother, Robert Perkins of Williamstown; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren.

John "Jack" Riesenbeck, 84, of Erlanger, died Friday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. He was a retired machinist for Lockwood Manufacturing Co., Oakley, Ohio, an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of St. Henry Parish, Elsmere, Knights of Columbus, and Lawler-Hanlon VFW, Newport.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Riesenbeck; sons, Daniel Riesenbeck of Lexington, Michael Riesenbeck of Greendale, Ind., Thomas Riesenbeck of Florence and Timothy Riesenbeck of Erlanger; daughters, Donna House of Independence, Judith Cochran of Erlanger, Jean Tetzel of Villa Hills and Mary Riesenbeck of Fort Mitchell; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Roy Lemaur Roberts, 44, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was an employee of Home Depot, Florence; a former employee of Wright Brothers, Cincinnati, and the Kroger Co.; an Army veteran; and a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas, and the board of Queen City Wheels of Cincinnati.

Ruby A. Stewart, 86, of Gratz, died Thursday at University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. She was a homemaker and a member of Gratz Baptist Church.
Her husband, James L. Stewart, died in 1973. A son, Prentice Stewart, and daughters, Linda Sanders and Jane Story, preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Marietta Rankin of Sellersburg, Ind.; a brother, Connie Mack Lynn of Port Royal; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Loretta A. Surkamp, 81, of Cold Spring, died Friday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. She was a homemaker.
