Silver Grove's Rev. Morton Oliver, began as Baptist tent preacher
The Rev. Morton F. Oliver Jr. and his friends used to travel all over Kentucky, preaching the Gospel to residents in the most remote places.
He spent entire summers living out of a tent, holding meetings in mountain towns that sometimes led to the establishment of Baptist churches.
"He felt led to go into the ministry," said a daughter, Patty Keith of California. "He did a lot of mountain mission work in Kentucky."
Rev. Oliver died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East. The Silver Grove resident was 69.
Rev. Oliver spent most of his years preaching at First Baptist Church in Silver Grove, where he was minister since 1981. He also preached there from 1961 to 1970.
He grew up in Latonia, and went to Holmes High School before transferring to Burlington High School when his parents moved his junior year. At the school, he and several friends were part of the Gospel Team, an evangelism group that preached around the state.
A talented singer and musician, Rev. Oliver conducted most of the music for the group. He directed choirs at many of the churches he later pastored.
In 1948, he was hired as pastor at Bethany Baptist Church in Holbrook, where he eventually met and married
his wife of 47 years, Rosalie. They had three children.
In 1952, he served as associate pastor at Erlanger Baptist Church until he was hired as pastor of Milan, Ind., Baptist Church in 1953. He served there until 1961.
Rev. Oliver was pastor at First Baptist Church in Silver Grove until 1970, and returned there again in 1981 after ministering at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Versailles and Trinity Baptist Church in Newport.
"He felt very led to come back here (to Silver Grove)," Ms. Keith said. "Even to this day he felt like this was home because his mother grew up in Silver Grove, and his grandfather worked on the railroad in Silver Grove."
Rev. Oliver enjoyed the outdoors, and did a lot of fishing, hunting, hiking and biking when he was young. He also collected Indian artifacts and enjoyed history and classical music.
In addition to his wife and daughter, other survivors include daughter, Kathy Ketron of Erlanger; a son, John Oliver of Mount Sterling; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
