Robert Beck, devoted to family, church
Robert J. Beck's belief in God and the church were so strong he walked three miles to and from Mass every day for more than 16 years.
Only when he fell and broke both of his hips did he stop his daily ritual.
"From the time he retired, he walked to daily Mass. He'd carry his Rosary, and he came to be pretty well-known by people driving along on the highway," said a daughter, Mary Jo Tiemeier of Melbourne.
Mr. Beck, a devout member of St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring, died at 4:25 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. The Highland Heights resident was 82.
Mr. Beck grew up in Newport and was a member of the second graduating class at Newport Catholic High School.
During World War II, he served in the Army and was stationed in London. He and Jeanette Frisholz Beck married
in 1944.
When he returned from the war, he settled into a 30-career as a printer with the American Book Co. He and his wife had four children.
Mr. Beck's life was spent serving his church, family and community.
As a father, he instilled in his children his work ethic, commitment to family and love for reading, Ms. Tiemeier said.
He attended his children's activities regularly and coached his two sons' baseball teams for five years for the Rural Campbell County Knothole League.
As a parishioner, Mr. Beck served his church as a member of the Holy Name Society.
As a husband, he was a life-long companion and committed caregiver to his wife. When she became so ill that she had to be admitted to a nursing home in the late 1970s, Mr. Beck visited her almost every day until her death five years later in 1984.
"In that five-year period, there were only two nights that he didn't get there to see her," Ms. Tiemeier said. "He took her a sandwich every night."
