Top mechanic Paul Smith gave classic cars new life
Bracken County antique car enthusiast Paul Junior Smith died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home in Johnsville.
Mr. Smith was 75.
Cars were his lifelong career and hobby, said his son, Jerry Wayne Smith of Foster.
Mr. Smith started working on cars as a young man in the 1940s and ended up opening his own business, Bracken County Motors in Johnsville.
He was a mechanic and could rebuild cars others had given up on, said his son. In the early years, that skill carried his young family through some lean times, according to Jerry Smith.
"I remember him selling his car so he had money to feed us kids and pay his bills," Jerry Smith said.
"He would go buy another old car and fix it up so he had one to drive.
"He was a very honest person. Even when times were rough, he paid all his bills and took care of his family."
Mr. Smith won friends with his outgoing personality and his firm conviction that there was good in everyone, his son said.
He ran his garage for several decades. In 1953 he started working for the Kentucky Department of Transportation as well. He was a mechanic for the state and was a supervisor when he retired in 1983.
After retirement, he started restoring antique cars as a hobby.
He and his wife, Mildred Louise Smith, joined fellow car enthusiasts in road trips that included as many as 200 to 300 Model A and Model T Fords, traveling through Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, said his son.
Mr. Smith's wife died in 1988. He married
Margie Wiseman Clos in 1991, and they shared the car hobby.
"We would make week-long tours to Indianapolis and take short tours on all the little, windy back roads," she said.
"He knew everything about those cars. He could recognize every model by its sound."
Mr. Smith helped found the Bracken County Antique Car Club, which later changed its name to the Double A Cruisers. He later helped start the Noken T's Model T Ford Club.
He was a member of the Salem Wesleyan Church. He had been ill for the past two years with lung and heart problems.
