James Calvert, printer and volunteer
James Earl Calvert of Covington was a printer and church custodian who made time to work with young people as a scoutmaster and high school band parent.
'He had a great personality,' said his wife of 51 years, Mary Esther Dungan Calvert.
'Everybody loved him.'
Mr. Calvert died Thursday morning at the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was 74 years old.
Mr. Calvert grew up in Covington and was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He worked as a printer for a lithograph company and a greeting card company before joining U.S. Playing Card Co. in Norwood, Ohio.
Mr. Calvert worked 15 years with U.S. Playing Card before retiring in 1987.
Mr. Calvert was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Latonia.
He was the church custodian and scoutmaster of the church's Boy Scout troop.
From 1982 to 1986, he was an active band parent for Holmes High School in Covington.
Besides his wife, Mr. Calvert is survived by daughters Karen Lynn Means of Florence and Sandra Lee Rehkamp of Erlanger; sons, James Richard Calvert of Mason, Ohio, Dennis Earl Calvert of Florence and Brian Wayne Calvert of Walton; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Latonia.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Connley Brothers Funeral Home in Latonia.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery in Erlanger.

Arminda Deaton, 78, of Melbourne, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ, Newport. A daughter, Dolores Deaton, died in 1957.
Survivors include her husband, Levi Deaton; daughters, Betty Reynolds of Florence, Anna Stamper of Ryland and Phyllis Goetz of Erlanger; sons, Estille Deaton of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Bud Deaton of California, Lee Deaton of Silver Grove and Billy Deaton of Melbourne; a brother, Alex Turner of Newport; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Sonja Eckler, 54, of Corinth, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Grant County.

Alma R. Farmer, 96, of Covington, died at 7:05 a.m. Thursday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Latonia. She was a retired mess hall waitress at the old Fort Thomas military post, and a member of the Fort Thomas Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, George E. Farmer, died in 1969. A son, Hadden Bland, died in 1998.
Survivors include sisters, Pauline Stewart of Campbell County and Melvina Karnes of Covington; a brother, Raymond Martin of Alexandria; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Fort Thomas Order of the Eastern Star. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
Dora Ellen Haley Hamilton, 96, of Brooksville, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Brooksville Baptist Church. Her husband, Grant Elmo Hamilton, died in 1968. A daughter, Helen Mae Hamilton, and sons, Jimmy Hamilton and Cecil B. Hamilton, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Emma Gertrude White of Covington; sons, Elmo Hamilton of Newport, Jessie Carl Hamilton of Hebron and Marvin Eugene 'Bobbie' Hamilton of Brooksville; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Powersville Cemetery, Brooksville. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 1 W. McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky., 41056.
Clara Havens, 98, of New Richmond, Ohio, formerly of Dover, died Wednesday at Dobbins Nursing Home in New Richmond.
She was a homemaker and a member of Dover Christian Church.
Her husband, Charles Havens; a daughter, Katherine Havens; and sons, Garner Havens and Eugene Havens, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Audrey Lanham of Felicity, Ohio, and Margaret Hayes of New Richmond, Ohio; a sister, Olga Brown of Covington; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Dover.
Thurman M. 'Jack' Hitch, 84, of Augusta, died Wednesday at Extenda Care Center in Augusta. He was a retired maintenance worker with Kent Manufacturing Co., Bellevue, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Mildred McElfresh Hitch; a son, Richard Hitch of Kentucky; stepsons, Ernest Fossett of Denver and James Maddox of Maysville; stepdaughters, Selma Holleran of Foster and Margaret Maddox of Newport; brothers, James Hitch of Highland Heights, Clifton Hitch of Foster and Robert Hitch of Peach Grove; one grandchild, 30 step-grandchildren, 40 step-great-grandchildren and seven step-great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Butler. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta, is handling arrangements.
Walter P. 'Bud' Janson, 94, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired presser with Hyde Park Clothes, Newport, and a member of St. John Church in Covington and the Catholic Order of Forresters.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Mary Cappel Janson of Covington.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Church. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Raymond C. Marksberry, 25, of Walton, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a warehouse manager with Nationwide Warehouse Co., Florence. A sister, Pamela Rogers, died in 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy Marksberry; a son, Raymond Marksberry II, at home; his parents, Barbara Carney of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Earl Mills of Cincinnati; brothers, Gilbert Marksberry of Taylor Mill, James Mills of Norwood, Ohio, and Richard Marksberry and Timothy Mills, both of Cincinnati; and grandmother, Verde Tipton of Walton.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Visitation will be 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Beauford Leroy 'Boots' Martin, 71, of Williamstown, died at 11:24 a.m. Thursday at the Veterans Admin istration Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a former security guard and employee of the city of Blue Ash, Ohio. He was a member of Sherman Baptist Church, Grant County, and was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors include a son, Michael Martin of Arkansas; a daughter, Betty Frances Martin of Covington; brothers, Winford Ray Martin of Williamstown, Ottis Lee Martin of Manchester, Tenn., Floyd Cecil Martin of Las Vegas and Elwood Martin of Mason; a sister, Alma Louise Faulkner of Mason; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mason Cemetery.
Jean G. Hartley O'Rourke, 78, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

William A. Payne, 85, of New Liberty, died Wednesday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind.
He retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel in 1974, and was a math and agriculture teacher with Owen County Schools.
Mr. Payne was a former administrator of Owenton County Memorial Hospital. He was an active member of the Owen County Historical Society, and an elder of New Liberty Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Verna Katherine Kemper Payne; a son, William A. Payne of Independence; and a sister, Eula Greenwalt of Livermore.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery, Owen County. Memorials are suggested to New Liberty Christian Church, New Liberty, Ky., 40355.
Edna Webster, 77, of Kenton County, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Ruth Wilson, 67, of Glencoe, formerly of Independence, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday at her home.

Violet Ruth Wilson, 76, of Crittenden, died Wednesday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of Dry Ridge Baptist Church. Her husband, Hubert Wilson, died in 1986.
Survivors include a son, Allen Wilson of Independence; sisters, Katherine Howe and Frances Mitts, both of Dry Ridge, Sylvia Dillon of Brookville, Ind., and Hildreth Arnold of Englewood, Ohio; and three grandsons.
