Kenneth Conners Sr., 93, farming grandad
Kenneth Conners Sr. was a self-made man who reveled in the joys of hard work, close family and many friends.
Mr. Conners died at 5:15 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 93. His neighbors were accustomed to seeing him raking leaves and taking long walks well past his 90th birthday. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew him as a golfing partner and a farming grandfather who understood gardens as well as he understood people.
'He was a very small, gentle man and a gentleman in every respect,' said his daughter, Ruth Finnell, with whom he had lived in Fort Thomas for the past 15 years.
'He didn't live with me and I didn't live with him; we lived together. He was a good, kind man with a lot of the Irish in him.'
He and his wife, Sadie Herzog, raised their children in Newport and moved to Florence in the late 1940s, when they bought a farm. They later moved to the Montgomery and Lebanon area in Ohio to be closer to General Electric, where Mr. Conners was head cost accountant. They bought another farm, to which they retired in the late 1960s.
He moved to Fort Thomas after his wife died in 1983. A son, Donald Conners, died in 1952.
'His life wasn't always easy, but he believed that, if you learn and work hard, there's no mountain you can't reach,' his daughter said. 'He instilled that in his children.'
