Thomas Turner, Newport commissioner
Thomas L. Turner, a former Newport City Commissioner and dedicated member of the Rankin Prout VFW Post No. 1404, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
The lifelong Newport resident was 76.
Mr. Turner served two terms as city commissioner, from 1972 to 1976, a time when Newport was famous for its strip clubs, liquor and crime.
The issues at times seemed insurmountable, but Mr. Turner was dedicated to helping inspire change, said his sister, Helen Mistler of Edgewood. He wanted to clean up the city and make it a better place for his family.
'He loved politics, and he wanted to change things,' she said. 'Back in those years, we needed help over there.'
Mr. Turner applied the same dedication and commitment he gave to the city to his work for the VFW. He served as past commander of the Newport post and also was honored with the title of service officer for the state of Kentucky VFW.
An Air Force veteran of World War II, Mr. Turner served as an airplane mechanic and gunner until his honorable discharge in 1945. Prior to the war, he had worked as a milling machine operator at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
He married
his wife of 43 years, Gertrude Turner, in the mid-1950s.
Mr. Turner, who attended Newport Catholic High School, held several jobs after he returned from the war before being hired by Pioneer Vending Co. in Covington, where he worked as a service manager, doing maintenance work to juke boxes, vending machines and other equipment.
He retired in 1987, after about 30 years.
Mr. Turner had many friends throughout his life. People liked him, his sister said, because he was sincere and helpful.
'He didn't seem to be an outgoing person, but he was sincere,' Ms. Mistler said. 'If you needed help, if he couldn't do it, he was on the phone getting somebody who did.
'He was kind of the behind-the-scenes guy.'
