Anna Pearl Poynter, operated Poynter's Supermarket in Hebron
Some knew her as 'Nanny' and others as 'Anna Pearl,' but everyone acquainted with Anna Pearl Poynter was aware of her energy.
'She used to say she hit the ground running,' related her grandson, Jim Poynter.
Mrs. Poynter, 93, of Florence, died Sunday morning in St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
Mrs. Poynter and her husband, William, owned and operated Poynter's Supermarket in Hebron.
'There was a restaurant in the back with a pinball machine, and she would fix lunch for people. They would sit around and converse about events in the big town of Hebron,' her grandson recalled.
The store, which also had an ice house, may have been one of the first discount operations in the area, Poynter said. 'They would buy things in big lots and sell at discount,' he said.
Mrs. Poynter, a native of Washington County, and her husband had operated grocery stores in Cincinnati before opening the Hebron store in the mid-1950s, her grandson said.
Mrs. Poynter was also active in civic endeavors, including volunteer work with the Boone County Community Action Commission. 'She was on the board which got food programs started in Burlington. She also worked with Gov. Julian Carroll in establishing vegetable gardens for residents,' Jim Poynter said.
In 1980, Mrs. Poynter was honored by the Covington-Kenton County Jaycees as the Outstanding Senior Citizen in Northern Kentucky. She also received the Daniel Boone Award for service from the Boone County Fiscal Court in 1984.
In her later years, Mrs. Poynter continued to be active, meeting with other senior citizens to sew, her grandson said. Her energy always amazed her friends and members of her large family, he said.
Mrs. Poynter was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.
Her husband died in 1987.
