James McDermott, Covington firefighter
James A. McDermott spent 20 years as a Covington firefighter, battling big blazes and small fires.
He swallowed smoke and had many sleepless nights. Yet he never complained about his job or his injuries, said his son, Michael J. McDermott of Villa Hills.
'I remember once, when I was about 10, he came home overcome by smoke,' Michael McDermott said. 'The whole neighborhood was worried about him, but he was fine. He was tough.'

Michael McDermott said he was proud of his father and appreciated the elder McDermott's work ethic, sense of humor and ability to enjoy life away from his job.
'He was outspoken and hard-nosed. He was a real case,' Michael McDermott said.
'He enjoyed life. He was a good father.'
