John C. Jacobs, retired bank president

John C. Jacobs was the retired president and chairman of the board of First Federal Savings and Loan Association in Covington, a Navy veteran and spiritual man.

"He was a man of great faith," said Mr. Jacobs' wife, Vivian M. Jacobs. The couple would have celebrated 40 years of marriage in August.

"He had a great sense of humor. He was a gentleman's gentleman. If he was your friend, you were very fortunate."

Mr. Jacobs, 74, of Lakeside Park, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.

Mr. Jacobs was a native of Struthers, Ohio, and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting at Youngstown State University.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, assigned to submarine service.

Mr. Jacobs retired several years ago from Huntington Bank. He worked a total of 30 years at Huntington and the First Federal Savings and Loan Association in Covington before the financial institutions merged.

Mr. Jacobs also worked 13 years with the Federal Home Loan Bank Board in Cincinnati.

He was a past president of the Northern Kentucky Savings and Loan League and a past director of the Kentucky Savings and Loan League.

Mr. Jacobs was a member of the Summit Hills Country Club in Crestview Hills, where he liked to play golf, and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell. He also was a member of VFW Post No. 3538 in Struthers, Ohio.

In addition to his wife, other survivors include sisters Mary Jane Jacobs of Oxnard, Calif., and Barbara A. Jacobs of Mentor, Ohio.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Erlanger. Burial will be in Mother of God cemetery in Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky., 41014, or Notre Dame Academy, 1699 Hilton Drive, Park Hills, Ky., 41011.

Anna May Botson, 76, of Latonia, died at 2:07 p.m. Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Fred Bryant, 81, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at his residence.

He was retired from Roadway Express, Sharonville, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Bryant; daughters,

Dorothy Memoli of Cincinnati, Sue McPeek of Fairfield, Ohio, and Sandy Bricking of Fort Mitchell; a son, Fred Bryant Jr. of Highland Heights; sisters, Ruby Cunningham of Cynthiana and Elizabeth Jenkins of Connersville; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Harrison County.

Anna Gertrude Chappell, 78, of Owenton, died Friday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton.

She was a homemaker, farmer and member of Dallasburg Baptist Church, Worthville.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Hayes Chappell; sons, Ronnie Chappell and Jerry Chappell of Owen County and David Chappell of Owenton; a daughter, Rita Duvall of Owen County; brothers, Edward Hill of Frankfort and Aubrey Hill of Woodford County; sisters, Ruby Katherine Webster of Hattiesburg, Miss., Mary Rice of San Diego and Carolyn Moore of Pleasureville; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Wheatley Masonic Cemetery, Owen County. Memorials are suggested to Dallasburg Baptist Church, Ky. 227 North, Worthville, Ky. 41098.

Bobby D. Dalton, 38, of Dayton, died Friday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati. Arrangements are pending at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue.

Frances Davis, 77, of Owenton, died Friday at her residence.

She was a homemaker and a member of Richland Baptist Church, Owenton.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmie Davis; sons, Allen Davis and Carl Davis of Owenton; a brother, Rome Johnson of Owen County; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Richland Baptist Church, Georgetown Road, Owenton, Ky. 40359.

Albert Thomas Harrington Sr., 77, of Harrison County, died Thursday at his residence.

He was a retired tool-and-die maker.

Survivors include his wife, Lou M. Platt Harrington; sons, Albert Thomas Harrington Jr. of Harrison County, David Loy Harrington of Georgia and Gary Lynn Harrington of Cynthiana; and one grandchild.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Republican Cemetery, Harrison County. Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, is handling arrangements.

Shirley Barbian McCarthy, 49, of Florence, died Thursday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. She was an operations manager for Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati.

Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Geisman of Bellevue; sons, Gary Mitchell and Grant Mitchell of Florence; her fiance, Gary Mitchell of Florence; parents, Victory and Edna Barbian of Cold Spring; a brother, Stephen Barbian of Alexandria; a sister, Judy Darnell of Erlanger; one grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Campbell Lodge Boys Home, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076, or Holly Hill Children's Home, Rt. 1, Box 21, California, Ky. 41007.

Edward Palmer, 70, of Morningview, died at 3:35 p.m. Friday at his home. Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs funeral home, Independence.

Larry Joseph Rudy, 38, of May's Lick, died Friday at his residence. He was a farm laborer.

Survivors include a son, Joe Keith Rudy of Maysville; a daughter, Ashley Renea Rudy of Maysville; his mother, Neva Berry Rudy of May's Lick; a sister, Lynn Kabler of Maysville; and a grandmother, Helen Berry of Norwood, Ohio.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Palmer Funeral Home, May's Lick. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery, Mason County.

William Schroder, 63, of Independence, died Friday at University Hospital in Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

David Alan Vollmer, 45, of Crestview Hills, died Thursday at his residence. He formerly worked as a quality control inspector for Jergens, Cincinnati.

Survivors include a sister, Joyce Vollmer Reilly of Fort Mitchell.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45103.

Ruth Rose Richardson Wassel, 85, of Covington, died at 12:15 a.m. Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. She was a secretary for several congressman, working with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She retired in 1979 from the Air Force.

She was a member of St. Mark United Church of Christ, Covington; Eastern Star Unity Chapter No. 112, Camp Springs, Md.; Congressional Secretaries Club; AARP; Hammond Organ Society, Trenton, N.J.; National Council of Senior Citizens, Washington, D.C.; and ACBL, Nashville, Tenn.

Her husband, Andrew J. "Jake" Wassel, died in 1992. Survivors include a brother, Everett Neal "Chilly" Richardson of Latonia.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Mark United Church of Christ, St. Mark United Church of Christ, 38th and Park Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015.

Edward Anthony Wells, 56, of Bellevue, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He worked in maintenance for Samuel Adams Brewing Co., Cincinnati. He was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters of St. Anthony Church, Bellevue.

Survivors include daughters, Brenda Classen of Jacksonville, Fla., Debbie Crail of Mason, Ohio, Karen Johnson of Bellevue and Julie Kim of Rome, Ga.; brothers, Al Wells of Union, Don Wells of Cold Spring and Mike Wells of Alexandria; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to University of Cincinnati Stroke Research Center, 231 Bethesda Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45267.

Mary Rose Porter Yelton, 87, of Fort Mitchell, died at 6 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

She was a retired cook for Holy Cross School and the former Kenton County Tuberculosis Sanitarium and did catering for weddings throughout Northern Kentucky. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.

Her husband, Clarence "Red" Yelton, died in 1983. A son, David Porter, died in 1991. Survivors include sons, James Yelton of Fort Mitchell and Nicholas Yelton of Taylor Mill; daughters, Barbara A. Yelton, Betty Rose Yelton and Joan Yelton, all of Fort Mitchell, and Janet Yelton of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Tuesday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
