Transplant survivor "Pat' Schroder, loved family, work, owning horses
William H. 'Pat' Schroder received a kidney transplant 18 years ago, and it extended his life so he could enjoy his family, job and interests.
'He was one of the longest-living kidney transplant recipients. He lived pretty much a normal life. He was able to work, play golf and enjoy owning horses,' said Mr. Schroder's daughter, Paula Kuhn.
Her father had received a donor kidney from his sister, Betty Heavenrich of Harrison, Ohio, Mrs. Kuhn said. Mrs. Heavenrich died two years ago, she said.
Mr. Schroder, 63, of Independence, died Friday in University Hospital, Cincinnati, of apparent complications from a heart procedure.
Mr. Schroder was a scheduling specialist with Aristech Acrylics, Florence. 'He took a lot of pride in his job,' said Mrs. Kuhn.
An Army veteran, Mr. Schroder loved horses and the race track, and owned several thoroughbreds which competed at Turfway Park and Churchill Downs over the past few years, his daughter said. 'He had the opportunity to enjoy what he liked,' she said.
'He always enjoyed horses. He really liked them,' said Mrs. Kuhn.
'He enjoyed his life and his children and grandchildren. He also liked golf a lot,' said Mrs. Kuhn.
Steven Miefert, a friend and co-worker of Mr. Schroder, was a partner in some of the horse ownership. 'We had a bunch of fun,' said Miefert.
