Sadie Reinhart, raised grandchildren after Beverly Hills fire killed daughter
After the fire at the Beverly Hills Supper Club took the life of her daughter in 1977, Sadie Reinhart became a mother again at the age of 62.
Mrs. Reinhart quit her factory job to raise her daughter's four orphaned children, who were between the ages of 5 and 14 when they came under her wing.
She was a devoted caregiver to her grandchildren, said her son, William Reinhart of Alexandria.
"She cared for them like they were her own," he said.
"She was a super lady. She worked hard all of her life."
Mrs. Reinhart died at 3 a.m. Monday at her granddaughter's home in Covington. The Cold Spring resident was 84.
She grew up in Versailles, Ky., and moved to Northern Kentucky, where she had relatives, in the 1930s.
She met her husband, Edward C. Reinhart, here. They were married
nearly 50 years and raised two children in Covington.
An employee for 28 years at Wadsworth Electric Co. in Covington, Mrs. Reinhart quit her job to care for her grandchildren after her daughter, Nora Lee Ellison, died in the supper-club fire that claimed 165 lives.
The father of three of Mrs. Ellison's children also died in the blaze.
Less than five years after the fire, Mrs. Reinhart's husband died, leaving her to raise the children on her own into her 70s.
During that time, she also worked in the cafeteria at St. Vincent De Paul school in South Newport, where Mrs. Reinhart's other grandchildren went to school.
