Loving dad Jerry Hollingsworth, used time transplants bought to the fullest
Generosity was a trait Jerry Hollingsworth learned early from his mother.
When Mr. Hollingsworth was a 16-year-old student at Bellevue High School in 1982, she gave him one of her kidneys. The transplant operation carried some risk and Rose Hollingsworth, who lives now in Dayton, was in the hospital longer than her son.
Nonetheless, "I never gave (the decision to donate a kidney) a thought," she said. "He was my child, and I loved him."
Mr. Hollingsworth, 33, of Dayton, died Monday evening at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. When he was 8, doctors discovered the ability of his kidneys to cleanse his blood had been damaged by a virus. At first, transfusions and dialysis kept him healthy.
But after Mr. Hollingsworth turned 16, kidney failure alternated with periods of remission. In all, he would have four transplants.
He made good use of the time they gave him.
"He lived every minute of life like it was his last," said a brother, Neil Allen Hollingsworth of Fort Mitchell.
Months after his first transplant, Mr. Hollingsworth returned to Bellevue High School's football team as a place kicker.
Jerry was ecstatic when he won a football game in overtime against rival Newport High School in 1982 with a kick between the goal posts, his brother said.
Mr. Hollingsworth finished school and always held a job. Most recently, he was in charge of shipping and receiving at Romi Machine Tools in Erlanger.
"He did dialysis, and he worked five days a week - sometimes six," said his brother.
The father of three children, Mr. Hollingsworth was a coach and umpire with the Dayton Youth Baseball League. He also coached Lincoln Elementary School's fifth- and sixth-grade girls and third- and fourth-grade boys basketball teams.
"He loved to fish. He loved to play in euchre tournaments," said his brother.
"Mom said one of his favorite things was to take his kids and go fishing before the sun came up and then come home after dark.
"He was very, very active. Very outgoing. He had a great personality, and he never met a stranger."
Mr. Hollingsworth's example encouraged others to demand the best of themselves.
"He would not take something for nothing," said his brother. "He would not let you do something for him. He wanted to do for himself.
"He lived with the cards dealt him, and he expected everybody to do the same."
