James Moore Jr., union steward at GM

James Moore Jr. was a lifelong patriot.

He joined the Navy during World War II at age 17.

When he was older, he was a union shop steward, encouraging people to 'buy American.'

Mr. Moore, a former Independence resident living in Williamsburg, died Tuesday at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Corbin. He was 76.

Mr. Moore was a native of Wheeling, W.Va., where his father was a coal miner.

He served four years with the Navy's military police in Hawaii, where his duties included chauffeuring generals, said his daughter, Peggy Moore Huston of Independence.

While Mr. Moore was in the service, his father decided he wanted to be a farmer and moved the family to a 60-acre spread in Pine Knot, Ky., near the Tennessee line. Mr. Moore moved to the new homestead after he got out of the Navy.

'Dad spent about six weeks there, and then he looked at my grandfather and said this life wasn't for him,' said Mrs. Huston.

He worked first with Chrysler Corp. in Detroit, then 22 years with the General Motors Fisher Body plant in Norwood, Ohio, as an assembler. In between, he worked for an upholstery firm in Cincinnati, where he upholstered the hearse that carried President John F. Kennedy, Mrs. Huston said.

Mr. Moore was a shop steward for a United Auto Workers local at the Norwood plant.

'He was definitely a bona fide union man,' said Mrs. Huston. 'You did not buy anything unless it was American-made.'

Mr. Moore retired in 1988, but soon grew bored and took jobs as a security officer.

Mrs. Huston said he 'had an opinion about everything.'

'One man told me, "Your father was a very, very emphatic man, and you either liked him or you didn't, but you always knew where you stood.' '
