Wilbur Winebrenner Jr., good with hands, heart
Wilbur E. Winebrenner Jr. of Burlington was a a mechanic, youth sports coach and Vietnam veteran with a knack for making friends and fixing things.
But to Mr. Winebrenner's family, he was first and foremost a family man.
'He was a good husband and a good father and we're going to miss him,' said his wife, Marie Winebrenner.
Mr. Winebrenner died Thursday morning at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was 52.
Mr. Winebrenner grew up in Florence and served in the U.S. Army from 1966 through 1968.
He lost his left leg in a motorcycle accident in 1974.
But he kept on going, said Mrs. Winebrenner. 'He never let anything get him down.'
Mr. Winebrenner was a senior mechanic and 30-year employee of the Cinergy Co. in Cincinnati. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 1347.
Mr. Winebrenner also was a Boone County knothole baseball coach in the mid-1990s. One year his team won a district tournament championship and advanced to a city tournament for Kenton County.
A 'jack of all trades,' according to his wife, Mr. Winebrenner made a motorized pitching machine to teach his players to bat.
When practice fields were scarce, he made his own on the 33-acre former dairy farm where his family lived in a house he built after the motorcycle accident. 'He could fix anything,' said Mrs. Winebrenner. 'He would do anything for anybody.
'He was a good friend, and well-liked. He liked people.'
Mr. Winebrenner loved to fish in an acre-size lake he dug on his property and stocked with channel catfish, blue gill, crappies and bass.
He also grew vegetables, planted fruit trees and built and flew model airplanes.
Mr. and Mrs. Winebrenner celebrated 32 years of marriage Feb. 25.
