Sister Mary Merita, noted teacher, librarian at Notre Dame, St. Therese
A love of nature propelled Sister Mary Merita into a long career as a teacher.
Sister Merita, 80, a teacher and former chairman of the science department at Notre Dame Academy, Park Hills, died at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Heights Infirmary, Park Hills.
Sister Merita was born Evelyn M. Kuelelborg and entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in Covington in 1936. She grew up in Cheviot, Ohio, and left home as a teen to study to become a nun, said her nephew, David Portwood of Fort Wright.
Sister Merita taught at St. Charles School in Carthage, Ohio, and taught at Notre Dame Academy in Covington for 27 years, from the 1950s through the early 1980s. She taught science, biology and health.
She was the moderator for the school's National Honor Society. Many of her students maintained contact long after graduating, and more than one named children after her.
'She was real laser - to the point,' said her nephew. 'She lived the simple life and loved it.'
In the early 1980s she retired from teaching and took up library work, first at Notre Dame and then at St. Therese School in Southgate, where she worked for more than a decade. Sister Merita's picture hangs in the school's new library.
