Furniture retailer George Camins, devoted to aiding veterans, Newport
George Camins, a Northern Kentucky furniture store owner, was a dedicated soldier who volunteered for more than 30 years at Veterans Hospital in Cincinnati.
He organized parties for the hospital's patients, and gave them combs, cigarettes and other items that he donated and collected from the business community in Newport and Covington, where his furniture stores were located.
Mr. Camins, who was drafted into the Army as a buck private in 1942 and was promoted to captain in 1943, volunteered as long as health allowed him, said a daughter, Sharon Dugan of Cincinnati.
The former Newport man died March 14 at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. The military experience left an unforgettable impression on Mr. Camins. He longed to give back to the soldiers who suffered losses in the war, so he became a long-time volunteer at Veterans Hospital.
He also did charity work for other organizations, including St. Joseph Orphanage.
He helped the nuns who ran the children's home get supplies and necessities, his wife, Josephine Camins, said.
'He just helped out anybody that needed help,' she said.
After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Camins moved to Cincinnati, where they raised three children. Mr. Camins worked in his father's linoleum and carpet store in Newport before he and his brother took it over in 1954, calling it Camins Furniture Store.
The brothers eventually went on to purchase Dines Furniture in Covington, and the two businesses were later combined to form C. D. Warehouse in Newport.
While he ran his businesses, Mr. Camins served for many years as the president of the Newport Merchants Association.
He used his many contacts in the city government to help get Monmouth and York streets converted from two-way to one-way traffic, and he was instrumental in getting street lights installed and parking lots added, Mrs. Camins said.
The improvements helped businesses prosper. 'He worked very hard when he was president of the merchants club. He helped get a lot of good things done for the city,' she said.
Mr. Camins also was a member of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport.
