Roland Lemberg, iron worker, devoted dad

Roland 'Yogi' Lemberg picked up his unusual nickname while serving in the Navy during World War II.

'It has to do with the Yogis, who are holy people. I'm not sure how he got it. It just developed,' said a son, Charles Lemberg of Alexandria.

Roland Lemberg, 75, of Newport, died at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at his home.

He was a retired iron worker with SOFCO Inc. in Cincinnati, a member of Iron Workers Union Local No. 44 in Cincinnati and a Navy veteran. His wife, Louise O'Conner Lemberg, died in 1992.

Charles Lemberg recalls his father as a man of strong beliefs who fought for the betterment of his children.

In fact, Mr. Lemberg started a neighborhood Scout troop when Charles didn't have a troop to join.

'He's always done whatever he could to help kids accomplish what they wanted to accomplish,' Charles Lemberg said.

'He revived the troop at St. Francis DeSales Parish in Newport. He always cared about children.'

After Charles Lemberg graduated from college, his father welcomed his son back into his home to help Charles obtain his law degre e from Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.

'Without his assistance, I'd probably have never gotten the education that I received,' Charles Lemberg said. 'He has always gone out of his way to help his kids. He and my mother were both that way.'

Other survivors include daughters, Patti Francis of Cincinnati and Anita Setters of Dry Ridge; sons, Mike Lemberg of Cincinnati, Robert Lemberg of Melbourne, Ken Lemberg and John Lemberg, both of Florence; a sister, Beverly Ward of Newport; a brother, Kenneth Lemberg of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Prayers will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to Ronald McDonald House, 229 Erkenbrecher Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45215; or Make A Wish Foundation, 100 W. Clarendon, Phoenix, Ariz. 85013.

Grete Abercrombie, 70, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Geneva Allender, 89, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., formerly of Falmouth, died Wednesday in Lawrenceburg.

Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Katherine Coffman Anderson, 90, of Newport, died at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was a retired statistical typist with Rouse and Rankin accounting firm in Cincinnati, and a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park. Her husband, Thomas Henry Anderson, died in 1960.

Survivors include cousins, Dr. Brian Kiely of New York City and Dr. Charles E. Kiely Jr. of Cincinnati.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 2690 Dixie Highway, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Marcella 'Sally' Noterman Auckland-Feistel, 86, of Cincinnati, died at 8:18 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Health Care Center in Cincinnati.

Survivors include a daughter, Catherine 'Mimi' Smith of Florence; a son, James Feistel of Ormond Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bellarmine Chapel, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. T. P. White & Sons Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Bobby Gene Burdine, 63, of Taylor Mill, died Wednesday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Helen Calsbeck, 70, of Dayton, died Sunday at her home. She was an assembler with the Wadsworth Watch Co. in Dayton, and a member of Dayton Eagles.

Survivors include sons, Bruce Calsbeck of Dry Ridge and Fred Calsbeck of Clearwater, Fla.; daughters, Carmen Davis and Lucy Shears, both of Dayton, Wanda Feiler of Dry Ridge, Constance Haggard of Clearwater, Fla., and Diane Mullinex of Beale, Calif.; a brother, Sam Carr of Augusta; a sister, Juanita Dunaway of Dayton; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Ronald Ray Clark, 62, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at University Hospital, Louisville. He was a farmer and groundskeeper.

Survivors include sons, Ronnie Joe Clark and Charles Jason Clark, both of Crittenden, Kenneth Ray Clark of Williamstown and John Alan Clark of Dry Ridge; a daughter, Judy McCubbin of Walton; sisters, Magdalene Overstreet of Ghent, Marie Godman of Owenton and Betty Whittaker of Florida; and seven grandchildren.

No services are planned. Burial will be at Eckler Cemetery, Corinth. Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, is handling arrangements.

Elmer E. 'Bud' Clifton, 58, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. He was a retired gas service worker with Cinergy, and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Verona, and United Steel Workers of American Union Local No. 12049. He was a Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Freida Clifton; a son, Sgt. Terry Clifton of Burlington; daughters, Tracy Sue Clifton of Corinth, Tonya Dale Clifton, Toni Marie Clifton and Tabitha Mae Clifton, all at home; his mother, Mary Delona Jump of Dry Ridge; brothers, Jesse Lee Clifton of Copeville, Texas, Bobby Ray Clifton of Dallas and Lenard Jock Clifton of Walton; sisters, Mary Hazel Briningham of Norwood, Ohio, Nadine Buchanam of Greensboro, N.C., and Betty Jane Gutman of Corinth; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Myrtle Damron, 69, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Highland Avenue Baptist Tabernacle, Fort Thomas.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Ray Damron; sons, Albert Ronald Damron of Williamson, W.Va., Billy Eugene Damron of Suffolk, Va., and John E. Damron of Highland Heights; daughters, Toni Shearer of Dayton and Ann Winburn of Fort Thomas; a brother, Hansel Simpkins of Williamson, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

John W. 'Bill' Detzel, 86, of Bellevue, died Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas. He was a machinist and pressman with Wiedmann Grote Co., and a member of Bellevue Retirees Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Johns Detzel; a daughter, Peggy Beckman of Villa Hills; a son, Bill Detzel of Fort Thomas; stepsons, Don Johns of Fort Thomas and Gary Johns of Edgewood; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.

Sarah Dowdy, 90, of Covington, died Wednesday at her residence.

Marilyn Catherine Endres, 68, of Kalamazoo, Mich., formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and was a Sir Lady Knight of the Knights of Columbus. A son, Bart Endres, died in 1986.

Survivors include her husband, James Endres; daughters, Catherine Matlock and Connie Endres, both of Kalamazoo; sons, Bob Endres, Jim Endres, Jack Endres and Bill Endres, all of Kalamazoo; and 11 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Margaret Church, Otsego, Mich. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with rosary services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Otsego. Memorials are suggested to St. Margaret School Endowment Fund, 736 S. Farmer St., Otsego, Mich. 49078.

Albert Garrett, 80, of Manchester, formerly of Harrison County, died Wednesday at Manchester Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry.

Naomi Colvin Gouge, 82, of Crittenden, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and member of Violet Ridge Church of Christ, Crittenden. Her husband, Carl Wesley Gouge, died in 1991.

Survivors include a daughter, Wanda L. Botkins of Crittenden; sons, Carl L. Hacker of Italy and Larry G. Hacker of Covington.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Bertha L. Haack, 87, of Fort Mitchell, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Arthur William Haack, died in 1984.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Mersch of Edgewood; a son, Arthur L. Haack of Cincinnati; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Myra Hendrickson, 70, of Independence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Richard David 'Charlie Brown' Howard, 48, of Corinth, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, of cancer. He was a roofer and a member of Plain View Baptist Church, Griffin, Ga. A son, William Cleveland Howard, died in 1981.

Survivors include his wife, Tonya Howard; brothers, Charles L. Howard Jr. of Griffin, Ga., and Kelvin 'Slick' Howard of Lexington; and sisters, Sherry H. Coe, Suzanne Strickland, Karen Smith and Renee Howard, all of Griffin, Ga.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in New Columbus Cemetery, Corinth. Memorials are suggested to New Columbus Baptist Church, 1618 New Columbus Road, Corinth, Ky. 41010.

Mary A. Hudak, 85, of Walton, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. Her husband, Stephen Hudak, died in 1992. A son, Robert Kenney, died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, John Hudak of Walton; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Church, Florence. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Anthony Kopinski, 40, of Covington, died Sunday at his home.

Survivors include daughters, Shannon Kopinski and Michelle Kopinski.

Thelma Ledford, 84, of Independence, died Wednesday at her home.

Ethel Messer, 74, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Tuesday at Franciscan Hospital Western Hills Campus, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Allen Messer; a daughter, Ruby Bentley; and a son, Gerald Lucas, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Sterling Messer and Mike Messer, both of Cincinnati, Allen Messer Jr. and Larry Messer, both of Covington; a daughter, Anna Black of Cincinnati; sisters, Gladys Gross of Cincinnati and Edna Kilgore of Middlesboro; brothers, Vernon Stewart of Four Mile, John Stewart of Corbin and Bob Stewart of Defiance, Ohio; 20 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Hilda Mullins, 80, of Verona, died at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

Cleatus W. Oaks, 49, of Taylor Mill, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was an employee of Shell Oil Co., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include sons, Shane Oaks and B. J. Oaks, both of Hamilton, Ohio; his parents, Robert and Pauline Oaks of Taylor Mill; brothers, Donald Oaks of Batavia, Ohio, and Robert Oaks of Cincinnati; and a sister, Faye Perry of Morning View.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Alois Wilhelm 'Lou' Pastor, 75, of Augusta, died at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. He was a retired tailor with L. S. Ayres and Saks Fifth Avenue, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Lou Haley Pastor.

Cecilia Marie Bush Penick, 92, of Walton, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a seamstress, and a member of Boone County Homemakers and Walton Christian Church. Her husband, Frank Penick Sr., died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Frank Penick Jr. of Demossville; a daughter, Nora Louise Kelly of Harrison, Ohio; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Shirlie L. Phillips, 77, of Dry Ridge, died at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired carman with C&O Railroad yard in Silver Grove, and a member of West Covington Baptist Church and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene Phillips of Dry Ridge; sons, Roger Phillips of Fitchburg, Mass., and Michael Phillips of Burlington; daughters, Jackie Phillips of Fort Mitchell and Terri Bass of Independence; sisters, Helen Ross of Cincinnati and Kay Loyd of Huntsville, Ala.; half-brothers, James Craig of Winfield, Tenn., and Don Newport of Lanett, Ala.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

David W. Singleton, 35, of Florence, died Saturday at Econolodge in Erlanger. He was an employee of Frisch's Restaurant, Florence.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Singleton; stepdaughters, Sonya Goetz of Covington, Shannon Patton of Cincinnati and Sara Ritter of Florence; his father, Sterlin Singleton of Morrow, Ohio; his mother and stepfather, Ruth and Fred Stamper of South Lebanon, Ohio; two sisters, a brother and six step-grandchildren.

No services are planned. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati. Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington, is handling arrangements.

Milton Devell Sizemore, 57, of Dayton, died at 1:38 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a disabled former custodian with St. Bernard Church and School in Dayton, and also worked for Dayton Schools.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Ortlieb Sizemore; daughters, Tina Sydnor of Orlando, Fla., and Charlene Sizemore of Dayton; a son, Devell Sizemore of Burlington; his stepmother, Cora Lee Sizemore of Cincinnati; sisters, Rosemary Grubbs and Norma Sizemore, both of Cincinnati, and Bonnie Picconi of Williamsburg, Va.; and brothers, Charles Sizemore, Jimmy Sizemore, Curtis Sizemore and Fred Sizemore, all of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cold Spring. Memorials are suggested to St. Bernard Church, Fifth and Berry, Dayton, Ky. 41074.

Ben Wallace, 21, of Butler, died Wednesday in Georgia.

Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler.
