Shirley A. O'Malley Pfeiffer, St. Elizabeth hospital volunteer
Shirley A. O'Malley Pfeiffer distributed newspapers and cheery greetings to patients during the dozen years she volunteered at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
Even in her 70s, Mrs. Pfeiffer continued to brightened hospital hallways - although failing health eventually forced her to confine herself to first-floor visits.
'She loved people,' said a daughter, Kristine A. Niemeyer of Edgewood. 'She was always doing something for somebody else. She was very strong-willed, and just a classy lady.'
Mrs. Pfeiffer, 72, of Crestview Hills, died Monday morning at the St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright.
Mrs. Pfeiffer was a native of Geneva, N.Y. During the 1970s, she worked as a receptionist for a Fort Mitchell dentist and then for a law firm in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Pfeiffer suffered a stroke about 16 years ago.
'She was pretty much paralyzed on one side and couldn't speak,' said Frank Niemeyer, her son-in-law. 'She basically had to learn to talk all over again.
'She did so well that her speech therapist had her speak to thousands of medical students at University Hospital in Cincinnati as an example of what is possible with modern speech therapy.'
Mrs. Pfeiffer also began walking four to five miles a day - often at the Crestview Hills Mall.
'She was a mall walker,' said Mrs. Niemeier.
'She loved that. She did a lot of socializing that way, and she loved to shop. She just kept herself busy.'
Mrs. Pfeiffer's husband, John W. Pfeiffer, died in 1973.
Other survivors include a son, Dr. Mark A. Pfeiffer of Villa Hills; daughters, Mary A. Walters of Villa Hills, Amy E. Morehead of Fort Mitchell and Shaun P. Myers of Fort Wright; sisters, Arlene Pfohl of Syracuse, N.Y., and Virginia M. Tracy of Geneva, N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren.
