Grant's Hubert Martin, beekeeper

For years, Hubert Martin corresponded with people as far away as Texas about the profession he loved: beekeeping.

He enjoyed explaining how bees interact and keep their hives, and he offered tips for people who wanted to cultivate honey in their own backyards, said his niece, Sue Neltner of Burlington.

His love for beekeeping earned him the nickname 'Honey Bee.'

Mr. Martin died at 10:40 p.m. Monday at Grant Manor Health Care Center in Williamstown. He was 93.

The Grant County resident spent about 50 years of his life keeping bees. He owned a piece of property on which he maintained hives, and he also kept hives on other property throughout the county, his niece said.

He had an inviting smile and an easy-going personality that made him well-loved in his community, his niece said.

A deeply religious man, Mr. Martin believed in giving back to his community. He regularly played the fiddle and sang gospel music for nursing-home residents and in churches.

And for years, he was a source of transportation for elderly residents and anyone who needed a ride.

'Even in his late years, he'd take people to the doctor in his beat-up pickup truck,' Ms. Neltner said.

'He'd take them to the grocery. He helped older people, and single moms.'

Mr. Neltner was never married, and he had no children.
