Gertrude Rueter, 99, shared love with nieces, nephews
Gertrude A. Rueter never married
and she had no children, yet she loved her sister's eight children as if they were her own.
Her sister lived just two doors away from the Covington home where Ms. Rueter lived for nearly 90 years.
She frequently took her nieces and nephews shopping and to parks, and she told them stories about how things were when she was young.
'She was like a second mother to us,' said a niece, Jean Teipel of Fort Wright.
'She paid a lot of attention to us. With eight children, I guess we appreciated that.'
Ms. Rueter died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was 99.
Ms. Rueter was a bookkeeper by profession. She worked for several years at Luhn & Stevie, a dry goods store in Covington, until it closed, then worked for about 15 years for Walker Tobacco Co. in Covington until it, too, closed.
She continued to work for the owner of the tobacco company, keeping his personal accounts, for many years.
Ms. Rueter's life followed a simple pattern: She walked to church each morning at Mother of God church in Covington, then walked to her job. She walked home each day for lunch and walked home again at the end of the day.
Later in life, Ms. Rueter enjoyed visiting another one of her sisters in Indiana. She also enjoyed antique shopping and knitting quilts and afghans.
'She could very well have afforded to travel to other places, but she didn't. She always looked like a million bucks,' Ms. Teipel said.
'We always just said that we were her interests.'
Ms. Rueter also was a member of the Daughters of Isabella.
