William "Pat' Fulcher, kept lead firm open
William 'Pat' Fulcher, was a quiet man with a strong work ethic and a warm sense of humor.
Mr. Fulcher, former president of Patson Lead Co. in Covington and one of the founders of the Thursday Men's Prayer Breakfast at Fort Mitchell Baptist Church, died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at his home in Edgewood. He was 81.
Mr. Fulcher was born in Monroe, Ga., and met his wife in West Virginia, where he had gone to work in a chemical plant. He was working with Allied Lead in Michigan when the company wanted to start a plant in Covington in 1959. Mr. Fulcher was its first and only general manager. When the company wanted to close the plant in 1988, Mr. Fulcher bought the business with his son, Jim, who had been running his own insurance company and had previously worked at Allied.
They re-named the new business Patson, for Pat and son. Pat Fulcher took the helm as president until he retired in 1991.
The company produces lead materials used as X-ray protection in the medical field. Jim Fulcher is now president.
'He was one of the most happy men I've ever known,' said Jim Fulcher.
Mr. Fulcher was a deacon at Fort Mitchell Baptist Church and was one of a group of 14 men who launched the Men's Prayer Breakfast in 1974 to bring businessmen together to pray before heding to the office. The group has grown into a community staple.
'He was mild and mellow and always had a smile on his face,' said Henry Vittetoe of Edgewood, who knew Mr. Fulcher through the prayer breakfast.
