Grants Lick's Robert Sheanshang, funeral director, carpenter
Robert Sheanshang built churches - with his faith, his involvement and with his hands.
Mr. Sheanshang, 68, of Grants Lick, died Saturday morning in University Hospital, Cincinnati.
The co-owner of Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick, Mr. Sheanshang was a deacon at Plum Creek Christian Church in Butler. He taught adult Sunday school classes at the church, sang in the choir and as an accomplished carpenter, helped build the church's first addition.
'He was a highly loved and a highly respected man in our community. His work at the church included helping people during the Falmouth flood,' said the Rev. Larry Travis, pastor of Plum Creek Christian Church.
He also helped build the Fairlane Baptist Church, Mr. Sheanshang's daughter, Cinda Mudd of Grants Lick, said.
Mr. Sheanshang was a former employee of Trailmobile, Standard Oil Co. and Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., where he was a top salesman and an instructor.
'He was a carpenter on the side most of his life, and when he retired, the last 20 years, he was a full-time carpenter,' said Mrs. Mudd. Mr. Sheanshang built many of the homes in the Grants Lick area, his daughter said.
Mr. Sheanshang had compiled a history of Grants Lick, and he believed that he was the oldest living person to be born in the community and to live there all of his life, Mrs. Mudd said.
Along with his professional and church involvements, Mr. Sheanshang was president of the Plum Creek and Grants Lick Oakland cemeteries. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Sheanshang was also a member of the Pendleton Country Club, and a former member of the Plum Creek Church and Cookie Jar Bakery softball teams. He liked to hunt and play golf, and he played softball until he was in his late 40s and early 50s, his daughter said.
In 1989, Mr. Sheanshang was diagnosed with a rare disease, aplastic anemia.
'He wasn't able to do a lot of things,' Mrs. Mudd said of her father's illness. 'But he was able to be with his grandkids,' she said.
'He endured his suffering with dignity and faith. He was an example for every Christian in our community,' said the Rev. Travis.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife, Betty Sheanshang; a son, Stephen Sheanshang of Highland Heights; a sister, Viola Monohon of Grants Lick; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Plum Creek Christian Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Plum Creek Christian Church Cemetery, Butler. Memorials are suggested to Plum Creek Christian Church cemetery Fund, Route 2, Box 292, Butler, Ky. 41006. Joseph Schmiade Sr., Kenton Police chief
Joseph E. Schmiade Sr. a former Kenton County Police chief, died at Saturday morning in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Mr. Schmiade, 60, of Morning View, retired in 1990 after 26 years of service with the department. He was appointed chief in 1989, succeeding Chief R.C. Richardson.
'He was 100 percent police officer,' said former Kenton County Judge-executive Robert Aldemeyer, who named Mr. Schmiade chief. 'He was very strong about being a good, clean officer, and I think the men liked him,' added Aldemeyer.
'He looked at his job as a 24-hour-a-day job. He was truly dedicated to it. He had police work in his blood,' said Mr. Schmiade's wife, Millie Folmer Schmiade.
Mr. Schmiade joined the Kenton County force as a patrolman in 1964. He advanced through the ranks, and as a captain, was in charge of the detective unit. He was the first officer from his department to attend the national FBI Academy in Quantico, Va.
When Mr. Schmiade wasn't working as a police officer, he was working on his Kenton County farm, said Mrs. Schmiade. He worked with her and his sons, she said, raising cattle, horses and tobacco.
'We put a lot into it,' Mrs. Schmiade said of the family's land.
Mr. Schmiade was a member of the Kenton-Boone Fraternal Order of Police No. 20 and a director of the Kentucky Police Officers Association.
He also belonged to the Northern Kentucky Police Chiefs Association, the National Police Chiefs Association, the National FBI Academy Associates and the Kentucky Law Enforcement Agency.
He was an Army veteran, serving in the military police.
Mr. Schmiade was also a member of the board of directors of Farm Bureau Insurance Co. and the board of the Kenton Fire District. In 1971, he was honored as Outstanding Policeman of the Year by Covington-Kenton Jaycees.
After retirement, Mr. Schmiade worked as an investigator for attorney Robert Sanders, and in recent years he had been director of security at Turfway Race Track in Florence.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons, Joseph E. Schmiade II of Independence, John Schmiade, Bill Schmiade and Tony Schmiade, all of Morning View; his mother, Marie Bach Klotz of Independence; a sister, Judy Schmiade Maynard of Independence; brothers, Jim Schmiade of Independence and Ronnie Klotz of Williamstown; and six grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Cecilia Church, Independence. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Paul Bergelt, 75, of Highland Heights, died at 10:40 p.m. Sunday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights.

Jay Carlton Bothman, 36, of Maysville, died at 6:29 a.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville of injuries suffered in an auto accident at Ky. 9 and Ky. 11 in Maysville. He was a siding installer with Bluegrass Homes in Flemingsburg.
Survivors include his father, Jesse Carl Bothman of Maysville; and a brother, Jeffery Carl Bothman of Knoxville, Tenn.

Earl D. Dodson, 85, of Maysville, died at 5:55 a.m. Saturday at Clermont Nursing Center in Milford, Ohio. He was a custodian with Mason County Schools and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Maysville. His wife, Meryl Reeves Dodson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, David Dodson of Frankfort; daughters, Beverly Holland of Mount Carmel, Ohio, and Myrna Tessitore of Loveland, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Agnes C. Fugate, 82, of Ludlow, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William L. Fugate; a daughter, Alice Pearle Craig; and a son, Roy Howard Fugate, all preceded her in death.

Ralph E. Hamilton, 53, of Dry Ridge, died at 11:15 p.m. Friday at his home. He was a highway construction worker.

Harold 'Butch' Heiert, 92, of Erlanger, died Saturday at Baptist Village in Erlanger. He was a station foreman with Fruit Growers Express Co., Silver Grove, a former Silver Grove city councilman and a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Camp Springs. His wife, Hazel Heiert, preceded him in death.

Grace H. Hendrix, 107, of Owenton, died Friday at Owen County Memorial Hospital. She was a teacher, an employee of Bell South and a member of Telephone Pioneers and Cedar Hill Baptist Church.
Her husband, Lee Hendrix, preceded her in death. Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Frank Landrum, 90, of Owenton, died Friday at Owenton Manor Nursing Home. He was a retired builder and a member of Drushall Memorial Church in Breathitt County. A son, Ronald Landrum, preceded him in death.

His wife, Mary Sirmons Sallee, died in 1994.
