OBITUARY: dateline, Marion, Kansas, unknown date.
The community was shocked and saddened by the death, Monday night, Sept. 26, 1927 of Mr. George W. Padgett, of east of Marion (Kansas). Mr. Padgett had been ill but a few days.
Mr. Padgett was held in very high esteem by everyone who knew him. He was a pleasant, upright, honorable, Christian gentleman, a fine neighbor, a kind, loving father, a wholesome dependable friend.
The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Mr. Releford, Wednesday ... at the Christian Church of which Mr. Padgett was a member. He was buried Sept. 28 1927 in the Marion Cemetery.
George Washington Padgett was born July 20, 1873, at the old homestead north of Peabody (Marion Co., Kansas). His impressive years up to .......were spent at that happy place. With his parents, he then moved to a farm near Florence, (Marion Co., KS) where he lived until he was married
on Dec. 20, 1899 to Miss Alice Irene Pipkin (1882-1977) of Peabody. For a time this happy couple made their home near Peabody. About seventeen years ago they moved to a farm east of Marion (Marion Co., KS) where they have since lived. Their home was always a happy place, kindness and consideration being the rule of the home not only for their immediate family, but for all. Truly, it can be said of Mr. Padgett, he was a faithful, true and loving husband and father. Into this happy home came two sons, Floyd Calvin (1901-1988) who is at home and Oliver Glenn Padgett (born 1903) who preceded his father in death Dec. 26, 1921. As we...sure and see things about us, the world looks sad, but God is good and ... through Christ we feel that father and son are shaking glad hands as they meet at the feet of Christ, whom they both served.
George was a Christ like man he decided early in life to become his disciple and during these many ... all who knew him stand and my he was a true follower. At the close of such a life, we hear again the words, "well done, good and faithful servant, enter though into the joys of the Lord."
Mr. Padgett, united with the Christian Church at Peabody, (KS) when a young man and when he moved to Marion he entered joyfully into the church work here. He was soon elected by the church to serve as Deacon and to this high calling in Christ he was most faithful serving into death.
He leaves the good wife, one son, Floyd [1901-1988], and his father, J. C. [John Cavin 1842-1940] of Florence who trained him in the ways of Christ. His mother [the former Margaret Ann Norris 1848-1880] died when he was young. His stepmother [the former Phebe Amelia Lofgren 1870-1958] is living and mourns his departure for he was to her a son and she to him a mother. He also leaves four brothers, William Sherman Padgett [1866-1944] of Marion, John Manson Padgett [1869-1953] of Greenleaf, Kansas, Rusau Woodson Padgett [1875-1937] of Peabody and a stepbrother, Curtis Padgett [1897-1960] of Oxford, Kansas.
There is one living sister. Mrs. John [Lucy Jane Padgett] Snelling [1877-1932] of Florence. Four living stepsisters, Mrs. Grace (Padgett) Selvy [1889-1974] of Burns, Kansas, Miss Harriett Padgett [1895-1975] of Florence. Mrs. Azalea [Padgett] Burkett [1901-1988] of Oxford, Kansas, and Miss Edna Padgett [1906-1999] of Florence. Preceding Mr. Padgett in death is one sister, Mrs. Porter [Mary Padgett, 1867-1927] Stovall having died nine months earlier, as well as twin siblings [1871-1872] [1871-1871] and stepbrother, Thompson Padgett [1884-1895] by John Cavin Padgett's second wife, Amanda Thompson [1861-1884].
