Covington's Frank J. Hanser, homebuilder
The name of Frank Joseph Hanser is perpetuated in the Covington subdivision he built and the street that leads there. But he was also a benefactor who offered his own home for civic club meetings and made sure people had the appliances they needed.
Mr. Hanser, 85, of Covington, died Saturday afternoon in Mount Washington Care Center, Cincinnati.
Mr. Hanser's wife of 53 years, Jane Hanser, died in 1997.
'Before our little community had the funds to build a civic club building, Dad opened his house to the members for meetings. He bought stuffed animals to give to the ladies as bingo prizes and prepared sensational food,' said Mr. Hanser's daughter, Joan Lilly.
Her father not only built the subdivision, on the site of the former Monte Casino vineyards, but lived there himself. 'He loved to be close to people and loved to be there for them,' said Mrs. Lilly.
'He was always interested in the average man. He didn't build for the rich. He wanted the middle class and lower middle class to have quality homes as well as the more affluent,' she said.
Her father built more than 300 homes during his career as a builder, many of them in Monte Casino, she said.
'One of my neighbors in Monte Casino once told me that she and her husband would not have been able to own the home they bought 30 years ago, and still lived in, if had not been for my dad,' said Mrs. Lilly, who continues to reside in the neighborhood.
Mr. Hanser began selling television sets at a store on Seventh Street in the late 1940s when they were still something of a novelty or luxury.
He branched out into furniture, at a store with his brother at Madison Avenue and Eighth Street.
'He often took in trade someone's next to useless merchandise of some kind so they could have something they needed, such as a new stove or refrigerator,' said Mrs. Lilly.
A native of Covington and one of 13 children, Mr. Hanser was very proud of being associated with the city all of his life, said Mrs. Lilly. 'Dad always convinced people to look on the bright side of anything even when they had to look very hard to find it,' she said.
