Philip Durcan, "always helping others'
When something needed to be done for his family, or in his neighborhood, Philip A. Durcan went ahead and did it.
'He was always helping others. He just couldn't say no to anybody,' said his wife, Lucile Durcan.
Mr. Durcan, 82, of Ludlow, died Saturday morning in St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
'He watched the neighbors' houses when they were gone, and when he saw that somebody's grass needed to be cut, or their snow shoveled, he just did it on his own,' said Mrs. Durcan.
Mr. Durcan not only worked hard to help put his three daughters through nursing school, but he also looked after their children, Mrs. Durcan said. 'He baby-sat with the grandchildren from the time they were born,' she said.
Mr. Durcan worked for a number of years with the Trailmobile Co., and when it closed he became an assembler with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati. He was retired from that job.
To help with his daughters' education and other expenses, Mr. Durcan worked part-time for many years at the Standard Service Station at Fifth and Main streets in Covington, his wife said.
'He worked there for many, many years, for my dad,' said Richard 'Butch' Ostendorf. 'He worked for us maybe 20 years and we were great friends. He was a swell fellow and got along with everybody,' said Ostendorf.
Mr. Durcan liked to hunt, and sometimes hunted with Ostendorf. 'He loved to hunt and looked forward to it every fall,' said Mrs. Durcan.
