Latonia's Martin Bailey, devoted to family
Martin Bailey Jr. of Latonia was a retired carpenter and veteran with a tremendous love for his country - and his family.
'He was very patriotic and proud of that,' said a daughter, Pam J. Dugan of Taylor Mill.
'He was really close to his family.'
Mr. Bailey died Tuesday morning at Rosedale Manor in Latonia. He was 70.
Mr. Bailey was a native of Covington and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
After his military service, Mr. Bailey worked as a carpenter with the Trailmobile Co. in Cincinnati, where he made floors for trailers.
Mr. Bailey served as president of the AFL-CIO union at the company before leaving in 1968. After that, 'He did a lot of maintenance supervision in different buildings and so forth,' Mrs. Dugan said.
In his youth, Mr. Bailey loved to camp. He also liked horses and cowboy movies.
Other survivors include a son, Terry Bailey of Independence; a daughter, Sharon Johnson of Taylor Mill; a sister, Pearl Neff of Covington; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home in Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

John D. Crowe, 70, of Cincinnati, formerly of Latonia, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Alvatine H. Eblen, 93, of Robards, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday at Methodist Hospital, Henderson. She was a retired school teacher and a member of Robards Methodist Church. She was a Bible school teacher; a member of the Women's Homemakers Club and the Robards PTA; and owner of Eblen Upholstery in Robards. Her husband, S. E. Eblen, died in 1984.
Survivors include daughters, Margaret Moore and Barbara Brown, both of Henderson, and Ida B. Royster of Edgewood; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Robards Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home in Henderson, and from 1 p.m. Thursday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery, Henderson. Memorials are suggested to Robards Methodist Church, Robards, Ky. 42452.
Claude R. Elliott, 94, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County.

Elizabeth B. Fausz, 83, of Alexandria, died at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Andrew W. Fausz Sr., died in 1973.
Survivors include sons, Andrew Fausz Jr., Albert Fausz and George Fausz, all of Alexandria; daughters, Elizabeth Leap and Agnes Gettys, both of Alexandria; sisters, Hazel Knapke of Indianapolis and Florence Kessler of Florida; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

William Thomas Fields, 70, of Brooksville, died Monday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with Black River Mine and an Army veteran of the Korean War. A son, Donald Bryant, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Marie Fields; sons, Billy Fields of Flemingsburg and Charles Bryant of Brooksville; daughters, Teresa Lee, Connie Bryant and Mary Colemire, all of Brooksville, Patty Polley of Ewing, Betty Linville of Maysville and Brenda Watson of Aberdeen, Ohio; a brother, James 'Happy' Fields of Maysville; a sister, Mrs. Arlington Campbell of Leslie, S.C.; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery.
Edward Adolf Gschwind Jr., 91, of Hobe Sound, Fla., formerly of Fort Mitchell, died Sunday at Heartland Health Care Center, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He was a retired senior partner and owner of Harry Greenwold, Wallenstein-Mayer Wholesale Jewelry Co., Cincinnati, and a charter member of Madison Avenue Christian Church, Covington. He was a Sunday school superintendent, deacon and elder at the church. He was a member of Lake Side United Methodist Church in Lake Worth, Fla., and First United Methodist Church of Hobe Sound.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Mary Elizabeth Hollenbeck Gschwind; a son, Gary Edward Gschwind of Hobe Sound; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Young Prill Funeral Home, Stuart, Fla. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Cemetery, Tequesta, Fla. Memorials are suggested to Madison Avenue Christian Church, 1530 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011.
Kathleen A. Haag, 43, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette, Ind., of injuries suffered in an auto accident. She was a homemaker, a past president of Friends Through Adoption, and a member of St. Timothy Church, Union.
Survivors include her husband, Scott A. Haag; a daughter, Amanda Caroline Haag of Florence; a son, Evan Nicholas Haag of Florence; her mother, Ruth Meagher of Munster, Ind.; and sisters, Amy M. Lee and Marjorie Meagher, both of Munster, Ind., Diane Meagher and Patricia Meagher, both of Chicago, and Janet Meagher of Orland Hills, Ill.

Russell P. Hodge, 59, of Hebron, died at 3:40 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a former security guard with Allied Security, a member of Hebron Baptist Church and an Army veteran.
Survivors include brothers, Larry Daily of Moorefield, W.Va., and Carey E. Dailey of Gladstone, Mo.; and sisters, Rosa F. Whittington of Erlanger, Audrey Church of Lexington, Ky. and Norma Cooper of Lexington, S.C.

Bette Schworer Hogen, 60, of Fort Wright, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday at her home. She was owner of the Hogen Restaurant in Chicago, a volunteer with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North gift shop, and a member of the Lookout Bowling League.
Survivors include her husband, George Hogen; a son, George J. Hogen Sr. of Arlington Heights, Ill.; daughters, Elizabeth A. Hogen of Chicago, Virginia Hogen-Rasso of Florence and Brenda S. Hogen of Fort Wright; brothers, Dr. Philip Schworer of Lakeside Park and Robert Schworer of Fort Wright; and six grandchildren.

Kenneth C. Kelly, 61, of Dry Ridge, died at 6:20 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired employee of Advo System, Florence, and a former employee of Kroger Co. in Springdale, Ohio. He was a member of St. Edward Church, Cynthiana.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ravenscraft Kelly; sons, John C. Kelly of Dry Ridge and Mark C. Kelly of McDonough, Ga.; daughters, Mary A. Kelly of Lexington and Julia A. Kelly of Dry Ridge; his mother, Averil Ginn Kelly of Lexington; a sister, Wilma Devers of Midway; and four grandchildren.

Mary M. Pettit, 76, of Crittenden, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence, of complications from a stroke. She was a member of Wilmington Baptist Church, Kenton County, a retired employee of Western & Southern Life Insurance Co. and a former employee of Mills Cafeteria in Cincinnati.
Survivors include sisters, Jean Menefee of Crittenden and Nancy Cavins of Mount Zion.

William 'Bill' Race, 74, of Crittenden, died at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice in Covington. He was a retired captain for the Fort Mitchell Police Department and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Piner Baptist Church, Kenton County, and Masonic Lodge No. 32 F&AM, Walton.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Ross Race; a son, Gary Dale Race of Alexandria; a daughter, Lisa Gay Bay of Covington; stepsons, Robert Mitts of Elsmere and John Mitts of Crittenden; a stepdaughter, Debbie Cain of Taylor Mill; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Robert G. Rankin, 62, of Latonia, died Monday at his home. He was a retired security supervisor with Nuckols Security for Ohio Co., Cincinnati.

Russell Junior Thacker, 72, of Maysville, died at 8:34 p.m. Monday at his home. He was a self-employed antique trader and an Army veteran.
