Diane S. Collinsworth, fight inspired son
Diane Susan Collinsworth's battle with cancer inspired her son, Adam, to fight for recovery after a devastating accident that left him a quadriplegic.
Mrs. Collinsworth, 46, of Taylor Mill, died at 10:20 p.m. Thursday at her residence.
Adam, a junior linebacker at Thomas More College, dove into a shallow pool Aug. 9, crushing the bones in his neck. The accident was difficult for Mrs. Collinsworth, said her husband, Edgar.
'She was trying to be very positive for Adam and to encourage him,' he said. 'If she could battle cancer for over four years, almost five years, and survive with what she had with hard work and a positive attitude that would help him. It did. He starts back into school next week.'
Mrs. Collinsworth was a registered nurse who worked until 2 1/2 years ago. When cancer appeared in her spine, the tumor was removed.
'After her first surgery, she had a little bit of problem with her right leg, but went back to work a short time before the cancer recurred,' Mr. Collinsworth said.
Mrs. Collinsworth eventually traveled to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where doctors removed part of her pelvis and its connection to the spine. She had radiation treatments and chemotherapy.
As a nurse, Mrs. Collinsworth spent 18 years at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. She also worked as a nurse at a veterans hospital in Kansas and as a school nurse at Morehead State University.
'She was always very positive, outgoing,' her husband said. 'She was a very good mother, raised her four children, and that was her No. 1 concern. They always came before herself.'
Mrs. Collinsworth was a member of St. Patrick Church, Independence.
