Jack McGarr, "just loved people'
John C. 'Jack' McGarr of Highland Heights was a family man and businessman who made time to do volunteer work for students, the elderly and his church.
'He had all of his children and his friends, and that was his life,' said a daughter, Peggy Sheridan of Cincinnati.
'He just loved people. He never met a stranger. He was always joking, and he just had the greatest sense of humor.
'Everybody loved my dad.'
Mr. McGarr died Tuesday night at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 71.
Mr. McGarr was a native of Ludlow. He was a credit supervisor with the Chrysler Credit Corp. in Cincinnati, where he worked 26 years before retiring in 1989.
He was treasurer of the Bishop Brossart High School Boosters of Alexandria for 13 years and a member of St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring, where he was a volunteer bingo worker. He also volunteered to do free tax work for the elderly through the American Association of Retired Persons.
'He was just a great guy,' said Mrs. Sheridan.
One of Mr. McGarr's sons, Michael McGarr, died in 1967.
Besides Mrs. Sheridan, survivors include his wife, Patricia Daunt McGarr; sons, Patrick J. McGarr of Albany, Ga., Brian J. McGarr of Woodlawn and James C. McGarr of Florence; daughters, Mary Beth McGarr of Cold Spring, Debbie Kuntz of Alexandria, Kathleen Garmany of Cold Spring and Julie Reed of Highland Heights; sisters, Helen Pohlman and Mary McGarr, both of Fort Mitchell; 26 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen cemetery in Fort Thomas.
Memorials are suggested to Bishop Brossart High School Building Fund, Grove and North Jefferson, Alexandria, Ky. 41001.
Edith Beebe, 72, of Florence, died Monday at her home. She was a retired maid with Drawbridge Inn, Fort Mitchell.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Polly of Owenton; and one grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 8 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Baltimore Pike Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Nora Dunson, 89, of Elsmere, died Wednesday at Victory Park Nursing Home in Norwood, Ohio.
Arrangements are pending at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington.
Mary L. Glassmeyer, 87, of Fort Mitchell, died at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright. She was a retired nurse with Booth Memorial Hospital in Covington and a homemaker. She was president of the Kentucky State Association of LPNs, a member of Covington YMCA Women's Luncheon and Mermaid clubs, the Northern Kentucky Toastmistress Club and the American National Red Cross Nurse's Aid Corps. Her husband, Frederick H. Glassmeyer, died in 1984.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 2 p.m. Friday. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Diocesan Catholic Children's Home, 75 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Helen Wright Hampton, 88, of Cynthiana, died at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. She was a homemaker and a member of Cynthiana Baptist Church. Her husband, J. R. Hampton, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Maurita Reeves of Cynthiana; a stepdaughter, Peggy Barlow of Cynthiana; a sister, Dorothy Ritter of Falmouth; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Bernadina F. Heringer, 91, of Northridge, Calif., formerly of Fort Thomas, died Jan. 3 in California. She was an active laywoman with the Diocese of Covington and a founding member of the Diocesan Vocation Group that promoted religious vocations. She was a member of St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas, served on the board of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Her husband, William J. Heringer, died in 1983.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Ann Byrne of Los Angeles, Carol Greco of Northridge, Calif., and Judith Stewart of Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Dr. William J. Heringer of Solvang, Calif.; sisters, Elizabeth Frey and Katherine Huber; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Chester Clarence Kirk, 89, of Bellevue, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired crane operator with Kirschner Co. and a member of James Wallace Costigan American Legion Post No. 11, Newport.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Deaton Kirk; stepsons, William Hauenstein of Alexandria and Richard Hauenstein of Newport; a stepdaughter, Linda Hauenstein of Newport; brothers, William H. Kirk of Fort Thomas and Isiah Kirk of Bellevue; and seven grandchildren.

Louise Lutz, 85, of Cincinnati, died Tuesday at Ivy Wood Care Center in Cincinnati. She was a factory worker with Zumbiel Box Co. and Wright Airplane Parts Co., Cincinnati. Her husband, Ralph Lutz, died in 1983. A daughter, Nancy Lutz, died in 1941.
Survivors include daughters, Carol Donaldson of Sevierville, Tenn., Mary Lutz of Norwood, Ohio, and Doris Gastright of Villa Hills; sons, Bob Lutz of Maineville, Ohio, and Ed Lutz of Cleves, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Anna Porterfield Samuels, 61, of Elsmere, died at 6:05 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired social worker with the Cabinet for Human Resources, Florence, and a member of First Baptist Church of Elsmere. Her husband, Robert Samuels, died in 1997.
Survivors include a son, Everett Samuels of Canton, Mich.; daughters, Angela S. Chambers of Erlanger, Deanna S. Duke of Elsmere and Mona Baker of Lexington; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere. Jones & Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Christopher P. Shay, 30, of Cold Spring, died Wednesday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.

Henry F. Wellbrock, 82, of Crestview Hills, died at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. He was a retired mechanic with Gulf Oil Co., and a World War II veteran. His wife, Dorothy Wellbrock, died in 1990.
Survivors include a son, Gerald Wellbrock of Highland Heights; and two grandchildren.
