Christopher Shay, played softball
Christopher Patrick Shay never complained during the year he battled the cancers that ravaged his body.
'I never heard him once say, "Why me?' He worked almost up to the very end,' said his mother, Kathy Johnson Shay of Cold Spring. 'He was so brave.'
Mr. Shay, 30, of Cold Spring, died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a graphic arts department employee of IVA Inc. in Cincinnati and a member of First Baptist Church of Cold Spring.
Mr. Shay loved being around people.
'Chris was a friend to almost anybody he met,' Mrs. Shay said. 'He never had an unkind word to say about anybody.'
Mr. Shay was an avid golfer and softball player. During his illness, it was softball he missed most. He used to play on up to four teams at a time, hitting the diamond four nights a week.
After he became sick, 'he didn't have the stamina to play,' his mother said. 'The main tumor was under his arm and he couldn't swing the bat like he used to. So he went and watched.'
Other survivors include his father, John R. Shay of Cold Spring; a sister, Heather Schroder of Wilder; and maternal grandparents, Clarence and Virginia Johnson of Wilder.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Cold Spring. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Evelyn Blakley, 73, of Fairborn, Ohio, formerly of Burlington, died Wednesday at Sycamore Hospital, Miamisburg, Ohio. She was a homemaker. Her husband, James E. Blakley, died in 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Blakley of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio; a son, Kevin Blakley of Travis Air Force Base, Calif.; sisters, Ruth of Virginia and Gladys of Alabama; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Alvin M. Campbell, 77, of Covington, died at 3:55 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was a former employee of Kentucky Chemical Co. in Cincinnati, a member of Mount Oilvet Church of Christ in Williamstown and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mendola Workman Campbell; sons, Steve Campbell of Covington, Herman Campbell of Dry Ridge, William Campbell of Ohio, Kenneth Campbell of Amelia, Ohio, and Lewis Printer Hensley of England; daughters, Brenda Cummins of Dry Ridge, Alvina Conley of Dry Ridge, Vera Edmondson of Williamstown and Wanda Kelly of Burlington; a sister, Thelma Brown of Corinth; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Sunday. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Beverly Ann Tomes Denlinger, 60, of Sadieville, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired employee of General Electric, Cincinnati and a member of Corinth Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Eugene Denlinger; sons, Tim Tomes and Terry Tomes, both of Cincinnati, and Tally Tomes of Taylorsville; daughters, Tammy Schadle of Florence, Tiffany Nicholson of Wilmore, Tina Crotty of Cold Spring and Tana Schriner of Louisville; her parents, Bill and Ruth Mierers of Cincinnati; a sister, Donna Hines of Mason, Ohio; 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Corinth Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Burial will be in Corinth Cemetery.

Victor Elmer Sr., 79, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired custodian with the Covington Board of Education and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Elmer; sons, Rev. Clarence T. Elmer of Cleveland, Victor Elmer Jr. and Ronnie Elmer, both of Cincinnati, and Mark Elmer of Newport; daughters, Delores Miller of Covington, Margaret Jefferson of Cold Spring, Marsha Elmer of Newport, Lavern Lawson and Cameilla Elmer Gore, both of Cincinnati, and Victoria Elmer Phillips of Fort Jackson, S.C.; brothers, Taylor Elmer and Louis Elmer, both of Cleveland; sisters, Doris Booth and Knoxie Mathis, both of Cincinnati; 39 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

Marie Faulkner, of Cincinnati, formerly of Bellevue, died Thursday at Franciscan Hospital Western Hills Campus in Cincinnati. She was a retired telephone operator with Cincinnati Bell. Her husband, Lee Faulkner, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Sharon Kettenacker of Mechanicsville, Va., Joan Lutz and Barbara Perin, both of Cincinnati, and Donna L. Whalen of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Robert Garrett, 81, of Fort Thomas, died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
He was a retired carpentry supervisor with American Store Fixtures Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Louisville VFW Post No. 2930080 and Carpenter's Union Local No. 698, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Reinert Garrett; a daugh ter, Nancy Dye of Salton City, Calif.; two granddaughters and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Annias 'Wayne' Honeycutt, 78, of Covington, died at 3:36 p.m. Wednesday at Jewish Hospital Kenwood in Cincinnati.
Survivors include a daughter, Verna Sampson of New Lebanon, Ohio; a sister, Ruby Rolland of Dayton, Ohio; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Mr. Honeycutt's body has been donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Steven J. Laycock, 41, of Park Hills, died Tuesday at his home. He was a systems programmer with Square D Co. in Crestview Hills, having previously worked for Provident Bank in Cincinnati, and was a former musician.
Survivors include his wife, Veronica Hall Laycock; a son, Zachary Laycock, at home; a stepson, Nick Staub of Indianapolis; a stepdaughter, Adrian Staub of Indianapolis; his parents, Robert and Mary Reed Laycock of Erlanger; brothers, Daniel Laycock of Richwood and David Laycock of Burlington; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Clarence B. McNees, 69, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. He was a retired farmer and mechanic and was a member of Robinson Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Cummins McNees; sons, Albert McNees of Bourbon County and David Glenn McNees of Nashville, Tenn.; daughters, Anita Jones of Shannon, N.C., Laura French of Harrison County and Faye McNees of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; stepsons, David King of Falmouth, Chester King, Michael King and Ricky King, all of Harrison County; stepdaughters, Marilyn Casey, Loretta Fulton and Wanda Lonaker, all of Harrison County; brothers, David McNees and Tommy McNees, both of Harrison County; a sister, Marian McNees of Harrison County; four grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Danny Poe, 39, of Florence, died Jan. 8 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include daughters, Christina Nicole Poe and Cheryle Lynn Poe, both of Cincinnati; his mother, Cora Siler Poe of Cincinnati; sisters, Shirley Woods, Rosalie Griffin, Lois Wrightsman, Elizabeth Barger and Annette Poe, all of Cincinnati; and a brother, Kenneth Poe of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
Jane R. Rees, 81, of Maysville, died Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Christian Church, Mason County. Her husband, James Madison Rees; a son, John Rees; and a daughter, Julia Jane Rees, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Jennie Rees of Maysville and Beth R. Webster of Greensburg, Ind.; sons, Jim G. Rees of Maysville and Daniel Rees of Oneida; and six grandchildren.

Louise Russell Shields, 58, of Lexington, died Tuesday at her home after an extended illness. She was a retired housekeeper with Eastern Kentucky State Hospital, Lexington, and attended Etworth Methodist Church, Lexington.
Survivors include a son, Raymond T. Shields of Lexington; and a brother, Thomas Russell of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.
Louise Tapley, 90, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Green Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carrollton. She was a retired dietician with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include her son, Richard H. Tapley of Carrollton; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in IOOF, Carrollton.
Lena Mae Walthers, 84, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Falmouth Baptist Church. Her husband, Edward Walthers, died in 1983.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Edward Walthers of Falmouth; sisters, Elsie Williams of Walton and Virgie Linville of Aberdeen, Ohio; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Sunday. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.
Francis J. Winstel, 84, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Jan. 8 in Columbus. He was a retired employee of the State of Ohio, a member of St. Agatha Church in Columbus and a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Crozier Winstel; a son, Mark J. Winstel of Williamsville, N.Y.; a brother, Joseph R. Winstel of Cincinnati; and two grandsons.
