John Anthony Callen Sr., loved, cared about tots, young people
John Anthony Callen Sr. always cared about children.
As a high-schooler more than 17 years ago, he began working with toddlers. Later, he became a youth minister.
'He was always concerned about the kids,' said his mother in-law, Brenda Henson of Walton. 'He loved working with young people.'
Mr. Callen, 34, of Walton, was pronounced dead Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence after a single-vehicle accident Thursday night on Bracht-Piner Road in southern Kenton County.
Mr. Callen worked for Lasco in Boone County. He was a member and deacon for Goshen Christian Church, Piner, and served as a youth minister for Latonia Christian Church.
Mr. Callen was always willing to do what he could, Mrs. Henson said.
'If you needed help, all you had to do was call Tony, and he would be there. It didn't make a difference if it was day or night, he was there to help.'
Other survivors include his wife, Sandy Henson Callen; a daughter, Kasey Callen of Walton; a son, John Anthony Callen Jr. of Walton; his parents, Earl and Linda Lee Callen of Demossville; a sister, Tami Gatewood of Dry Ridge; and a brother, Earl Jeffrey Callen of Petersburg.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Walter F. Bowling, 79, of New Port Richey, Fla., died at 1:25 p.m. Thursday at Veterans Hospital in Cincinnati. He was retired from Interlake Steel Co. where he had been in quality control. His wife, Tinsie Bowling, died in 1996.
Survivors include a son, Walter Bowling Jr. of Florence; a stepdaughter, Carole Rardon of Polo, Mo.; sisters, Louisa McVee of Grant County, Doris Brill and Ruby Bingham, both of Torrence, Calif., Viola Brann and Betty Jane Thurman, both of Covington, and Rosie Daugherty of Falmouth; brothers, Robert Bowling of Dry Ridge, Forest Bowling of Valparaiso, Ind., and Harry Bowling of Aurora, Ind.; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 1 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Josiah Bryant, 62, of Bethel, Ohio, died Wednesday at Brown County (Ohio) General Hospital. He worked in the trailer repair business for more than 30 years for B&B Trailer and TSR Trailer.
Survivors include his wife, Velinda Bryant; sons, Danny Bryant of Mount Carmel, Ohio, John Bryant of Cocoa, Fla., and Brian Stephens of New Richmond, Ohio; daughters, Debbie Zimmerman of Burlington, Cherri Pollitt of Maysville and Kelly Christian of Cocoa, Fla.; sisters, Kay Stahl and Billie Jean Petrey of Taylor Mill; brothers, P.W. Bryant of Nevada and Henry Bryant of Edgewood; seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, with visitation 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Louise Potter Duke, 94, of Florence, died at 2:55 a.m. Friday at Florence Park Care Center. A longtime resident of Nashville, Tenn., she was a homemaker and a member of St. George's Episcopal Church, Nashville. Her husband, Dr. Raphael Semms Duke, died in 1975.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Dunn of Lexington and Sally George of Erlanger; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Committal of remains will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Nashville, Tenn. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
Nora Dunson, 89, of Elsmere, died Wednesday at Victory Park Nursing Home in Norwood, Ohio. She was a homemaker and a member of Zion Baptist Church, Walton. Her husband, Raymond Dunson, died in 1962.
Survivors include a daughter, Juanita Wood of Detroit; brothers, William Siffel of Covington and Carl Siffel and Charles Smith, both of Cincinnati; sisters, Pernell Christian and Estella Salyers, both of Lexington; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Baptist Church, Walton. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere.
Mary Vern Feiler, 72, of Burlington, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Marie T. Meese Flenniken, 77, of Lakeside Park, died at 7:15 a.m. Friday at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Edgewood. She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Roy B. Flenniken, died in 1983. Survivors include a son, Roy J. Flenniken of Lakside Park; a daughter, Laurie T. Flenniken of Lakeside Park; and sisters, Camilla T. Meese of Covington and Gabriella Hergott of Cincinnati.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Middendorf- Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Florence Marie Heekin, 89, of Newport, died at 2:15 a.m. Friday at Clermont Mercy Hospital in Batavia, Ohio. She was a beautician for 35 years in Newport. Her husband, Robert Heekin, died in 1967.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Plummer of Newport; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Michael K. Higgins, 36, of Fort Wright, died Thursday in Burlington. He was a production manager for the Viox Co., Erlanger, and had worked in the computer department at Procter and Gamble Co., Cincinnati. He was a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright, and the Covington Turner's Club.
Survivors include his parents, Michael F. Higgins and Mary Elaine Rothring Higgins of Fort Wright; and brothers, Mark L. Higgins of Park Hills and Jeffery J. Higgins of Erlanger.

Willie Paul Kapiscahke, 73, of Washington Court House, Ohio, died Thursday at Carlton Manor in Washington Court House. He was a retired machine operator for Husky Products.
His wife, Lisa Kapiscahke, died in 1968. Survivors include a friend, David Moore of Union.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Timothy Church, Union. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Theresa B. Lauber, 97, of Newport, died at 5:10 a.m. Friday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia, and St. Helen's Society of Holy Cross Church. Her husband, Carl E. Lauber, died Dec. 23, 1998.
Survivors include a son, Louis R. Lauber of Cincinnati; daughters, Loraine Biava of Westville, Ill., and Helen Kemper of Cincinnati; 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Monday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia, with visitation from 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Tom Mattox, 58, of Cincinnati, formerly of Pendleton County, died Friday at his residence. He was a factory worker and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Mattox of Norwood, Ohio; a daughter, Karen Leahy of Mount Healthy, Ohio; his mother, Clara Mains Mattox of Falmouth; a brother, David Mattox of Falmouth; a sister, Virginia Goetz of Melbourne; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, with visitation at noon Monday. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Ruth M. Moellman, 71, of Covington, died at 6:38 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a teacher for First Methodist Day Care, Covington.
Her husband, Charles F. Moellman, died in 1988. Survivors include a son, Mike Moellman of Covington; a daughter, Cathy Hutton of Covington; sisters, Lorraine Webster of Fayetteville, Ohio, and Mary Seiter of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.

Barbara R. Stacy, 70, of Malvern, Pa., formerly of Bellevue, died Thursday at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of Great Valley Presbyterian Church, Malvern, Pa., and Jesus Focus Ministry, Churchville, Pa.
Survivors include her husband, Harrison M. Stacy; a son, David R. Stacy of Bucks County, Pa.; a daughter, Carol Stacy Brotherton of Centreville, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Hubert K. Williams, 93, of Leesburg, Fla., formerly of Taylor Mill, died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday at Arante Nursing Home in Leesburg. He was a retired line foreman for Cincinnati Bell Telephone Co., and a member of Runyan Memorial Church, Bradford Lodge No. 123 in Independence, the Pioneers Club and the Scottish Rite.
Survivors include his wife, Berda Lee Williams; a son, Don Williams of Independence; stepsons, Bill Glessner and Don Glessner of Leesburg, Fla.; brothers, Charles Williams of Taylor Mill and Earl Williams of Independence; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with Masonic services at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
