Agriculture agent Joseph Claxon Jr., led fairs, farm bureau, "loved people'
While puffing on a pipe, Joseph Lucas Claxon Jr. would make his talks on the past and future practices of agriculture more lively by sprinkling in jokes.
'He could capture anyone's attention,' said his son, Joseph Claxon III of Florence. 'He would tell stories that people could relate to and understand and make them kind of feel like they were part of it, or there. He also showed the humor in some situations. He was a talker.'

He was always willing to lend a helping hand. For instance, he donated the land for a Florence fire station, which now bears his name, the Claxon Florence Fire and Emergency Medical Services Station.
'He would go out of his way and try to do whatever he could for people and never ask for any payment or anything in return,' his son said.
Mr. Claxon just loved people, his son said.
'People were his hobby,' Claxon's son said. 'He was a very people-oriented individual. He would try to help people in whatever situation they were in.'
