Benny Metcalfe, Augusta funeral director, overcame disability
Benny Metcalfe suffered an injury to his spinal cord more than 30 years ago and had to use a wheelchair.
But through help from his parents and friends and his determination to succeed, he became a funeral director in his family's business and an amateur ham radio operator.
'He didn't let his injury stop him. He never felt sorry for himself,' said Clark Hennessey, a partner in the Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home in Augusta.
'He made friends wherever he went. And he had a lot of friends from the ham radio.'
Mr. Metcalfe, 59, of Augusta, died Wednesday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a funeral director with Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home in Augusta.
Mr. Metcalfe was injured during a swimming accident in 1963. His parents nursed him back to health and he later earned his embalmer's license.
Mr. Metcalfe had a sunny disposition, Hennessey said.
'He was like a brother to me,' Hennessey said. 'Benny was a strong fellow. Most everyone he met liked him right away.'
Mr. Metcalfe was a member of Augusta Presbyterian Church. He was a licensed extra amateur radio operator, and a member of the Greater Mason County and the Grant amateur radio associations.
Survivors include his father, Ben T. Metcalfe of Augusta.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Au gusta. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery.

Rev. Raymond W. Steinhauser, devoted self to others via teaching, jail ministry
Rev. Raymond W. Steinhauser pursued his calling as a Catholic priest with dignity and grace.
A longtime colleague, Father Tom Sacksteder, said Rev. Steinhauser, who grew up in Fort Thomas, took care of his fellow priests in the seminary.
'He saw that we had food on the table, that the building was warm and that everything was taken care of,' Father Sacksteder said. 'He did all the basic things of life for people in a very dedicated fashion.'
Rev. Steinhauser, 71, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday at Naples Community Hospital after suffering a massive heart attack.
Father Steinhauser was ordained in 1954 at St. Mary Cathedral in Covington. He was a former member of the faculty at Covington Latin School in Covington and St. Pius X Seminary in Erlanger, where he was also the spiritual director. Father Steinhauser was a former assistant pastor with St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright, and was pastor of St. Ann Church in Covington from 1989 until his retirement in 1994.
He also had special ministries to substance abusers in Northern Kentucky and Kenton County Jail inmates in the 1980s.
'He had a strong dedication to people who were struggling in life, people who were in jail or who had drinking problems,' Father Sacksteder said.
'He was open and understanding of people who suffered a great deal.
'He brought a great deal of calm to people who otherwise would have struggled. I will always emulate his prayer and his dedication to giving Mass.'
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Pius X Cemetery, Erlanger. Roy Collins, of Augusta, died Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.

Dorothy Ernestine Davis, 89, of Frankfort, formerly of Erlanger, died Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Jerome F. Davis of Erlanger, William A. Davis of North Augusta, S.C., and Dennis L. Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; daughters, Duane M. Davis of Erlanger and Mary Carolyn Bolte of Frankfort; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Ruby O'Dell Gill, 95, of Cincinnati, formerly of Corinth, died Wednesday at Lincoln Health Care Center in Connersville, Ind. She was a member of Stringtown Christian Church in Corinth.
Survivors include a son, Donald G. Gill of Greenville, Ohio; a daughter, Helen G. Buckler of Hebron; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery, Grant County.
Cyrilla L. Gough, 78, of Fort Mitchell, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Deer Park, Ohio.
Survivors include a son, Michael Gough of Taylor Mill; daughters, Sheila Whitford of Fort Mitchell, Guendolyn Krebs of Hebron and Jennifer Sommers of Taylor Mill; a brother, Robert Bergen of Rose Point, Ohio; sisters, Alma M. McMahn of Cincinnati and Elizabeth Hettel of Hampton, Fla.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Kate M. Haus, 93, of Paramus, N.J., formerly of Covington, died Tuesday at Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, N.J. She was an assembly worker with K. D. Lamp Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Independence. Her husband, Joseph Haus, died in 1981.
Survivors include a son, Howard Welch of Paramus, N.J.; sisters, Gladys Halderman of Latonia, Louise Oliver of Indepen dence and Viola Jump of Mount Zion; and brothers, Louis Setters of Anaheim, Calif., and Howard Setters of Mount Gilead, Ohio.

Mariellen Garges Hobbs, 76, of Erlanger, died at 3:10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was owner of Mariellen's Food Shop in Elsmere, a former clerk with the McAlpin's department store in Crestview Hills, and a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere, and Erlanger Lions Women's Auxiliary. Her husband, James L. Hobbs, died in 1973.
Survivors include sons, Timothy M. Hobbs of Fort Wright and David A. Hobbs of Fort Mitchell; a daughter, Marianne Hobbs of Erlanger; and four grandchildren.

Mary G. 'Sis' Tepe Hunt, 72, of Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Latonia, died Dec. 1 in Sacramento. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, David Hunt of Sacramento; a daughter, Mariellen Coupee of San Ramon, Calif.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.

Minnie Hurst, 81, of Butler, died Wednesday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Clarence Hurst, died in 1993. Daughters, Linda Hurst and Clara Hurst, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Ted Hurst and David Hurst, both of Butler, Donnie Hurst of Crittenden, Gene Hurst of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Gary Hurst of Hamilton, Ohio; daughters, Louise Borucki of Birmingham, Mich., Janet Raftice of Dry Ridge and Getty Guttridge of Falmouth; a sister, Myrtle Day of Newport; and several grandchildren.

Helen J. Feder Kennedy, 65, of Amelia, Ohio, formerly of Latonia, died at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia.
Survivors include her husband, David Eugene Kennedy; sons, David K. Kennedy of Cincinnati and Neal K. Kennedy of Amelia, Ohio; daughters, Meghan Kennedy Rosenfeld of Northbrook, Ill., and Keavy Kennedy of Cincinnati; sisters, Marcella Hageman and Sister Martha Feder, both of Villa Hills; and one granddaughter.

Leonard Joseph Kramer, 90, of Elsmere, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a fireman and security guard with the federal government depot in Sharonville, Ohio, a member of Elsmere Church of Christ and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Rena Adams Kramer; stepsons, Emmett Buckley of Erlanger and Howard Buckley of Elsmere; a stepdaughter, Marie Mullins of Elsmere; sisters, Josephine Kramer of Elsmere, Mary Kramer and Elizabeth Mohr, both of Brooksville, Fla.; 10 step-grandchildren, 16 step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Elizabeth Marksberry, 75, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include her husband, Estle Marksberry; sons, Bill Marksberry of Erlanger, Rick Marksberry and Todd Marksberry, both of Elsmere; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Eugene 'Obie' Oberding, 88, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired ironworker, a past president of Bridge and Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers Union Local No. 44 in Cincinnati, and a Coast Guard veteran.
Survivors include sons, Eugene Oberding of Jacksonville, Fla., and Leroy Oberding of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Norma Waechter of Edgewood; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Gertrude Snow Osburne, 79, of Carrollton, died Wednesday at Green Valley Health Care Center in Carrollton. She was a retired cook with Cooper's Restaurant, Carrollton, and a member of Sanders Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Winnie Sutton of Erlanger, Eva Harmon and Diane Noble, both of Carrollton, Stacey Trapp of Burlington and Leshia Osburne of Worthville; sons, Stanley Snow of Owenton, Larry Snow of Taylor Mill, Greg Snow of Ghent and Bill Osburne of Florence; sisters, Winnie Sanders of Green Cove Springs, Fla., and Mary Ruth Littrell of Independence; a brother, Clyde Bickers of Madison, Ind.; 32 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Charlene G. Pfeffer, 70, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ludlow, died Wednesday at Miami Haven Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a member of Miamitown, Ohio, Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Phillip Merrill of Cincinnati; a daughter, Paula Hill of Los Angeles; a brother, Vincent Pfeffer of Blue Springs, Mo., and Harry Pfeffer of St. Joseph, Mo.

John Elmer Schaefer, 85, of Florence, died Thursday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. He was a drafting engineer with General Electric in Cincinnati, a former Florence city councilman from 1962-67, and a member of the Boone County Planning and Zoning Commission from 1968-75. He was a member of St. Paul Church in Florence, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Mary Thornton Schaefer, died in 1993.
Survivors include a sister, Vera Rechtin of Highland Heights; and a brother, Leroy Schaefer of Dayton.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Florence Cemetery.
Pauline Smith, 77, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Oakwood Baptist Church, Cynthiana. Her husband, K. B. Smith, and a son, Kurnice Gene Smith, preceded her in death.

James H. Stapleton, 78, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired driver with United Parcel Service and an employee of Pilot Home Center in Fort Mitchell. He was a member of Scottish Rite, the Robert Burns Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star Emera Chapter, the Rangers Association, the TR5's and Good Sam Angels camping clubs, and a former square dancer and round dancer. He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Stapleton; and a sister, Virginia Stapleton of Erlanger.

Loren Swisher, 84, of Crescent Springs, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

H. Clyde Utter, 85, of California, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired mechanic with Neltner Oil Co. in Newport and Kentucky Motors, Covington. He was a member of Carthage Church of the Nazarene, American Association of Retired Persons, Sun Valley Senior Citizens; a former vice president of Campbell County Farm Bureau; and a former member of the board of directors fo the Campbell County Southern States Co-op.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline McCormick Utter.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Carthage Church of the Nazarene. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Gilead Cemetery, California.
