Carl R. Osborn, devoted father
Carl Russell Osborn Sr. spent a lot of time in Northern Kentucky visiting his son, Post photographer James W. "Jim" Osborn of Florence.
The younger Osborn, who has won many professional awards during a 20-year career at The Post, attributes his work ethic to his father, who quit school in the ninth grade during the Great Depression to work on the family farm in Ashley, Ohio.
"He gave me my sense of values as far as what's right and what's wrong," Jim Osborn said.
"He always told me, "If you are going to do something, do it right the first time. Don't do it halfway.' I try to pass that on to my own kids."
Mr. Osborn, 79, of Houcktown, Ohio, died Monday at Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy, Ohio.
Mr. Osborn was retired from National Lime & Stone Co. He also worked for Findlay & Mt. Blanchard Landmark and was a member of the Houcktown United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Jean Shaffer, two brothers and four sisters.
Jim Osborn was the first of Mr. Osborn's children to attend college and the elder Osborn was a proud father on graduation day, his son said.
"I remember him grinning from ear-to-ear. He said, "You know I love you, don't you?" Jim Osborn said.
Mr. Osborn was a quiet man who was slow to anger. However, he wasn't afraid to express his opinions and taught his children to do the same.
"The biggest thing is, my dad never quit. He was extremely competitive," Jim Osborn said.
"I owe an awful lot to him. The older he got, the closer we grew. I was holding his hand when he died. I'm glad I was there with him."
