Welder Charles "Red' Crawford, inspected Saturn 5 spacecraft
Physical adversity seemed to make Charles W. 'Red' Crawford stronger.
'He was a role model for others who faced adversity,' said his wife, Annette.
Mr. Crawford, 58, of Mays Lick, died Sunday morning at his home, after an extended illness.
Mr. Crawford had two kidney transplants, in 1970 and again in 1987, and two heart attacks and open heart surgery in 1992, his wife said.
After each medical problem he returned to work, in a variety of occupations which ranged from welder to cattle dealer.
At one point, Mr. Crawford gave up working with a plumber near his home and took a job welding heavy equipment at Eastern Kentucky strip mines, Mrs. Crawford said. 'Mentally it was challenging for him, and seemed to improve his health,' she said.
In more recent years, Mr. Crawford concluded that he knew something about cattle, from living for years on a farm, and began to buy, sell and transport cattle, Mrs. Crawford said. The occupation took him throughout Kentucky and Ohio, and to Florida and Kansas, she said.
A native of Mason County, Mr. Crawford owned a welding shop in Aberdeen, Ohio, even before he had a certificate to weld, his wife said. He went to school to master the trade, she said. 'He was gifted,' she added.
Mr. Crawford also worked as a welding inspector on the Saturn 5 rocket at Cape Canaveral, Fla., and on interstate highway projects in the Atlanta area.
'It was an exciting time to be at Cape Canaveral. He would be getting on or off a plane and pass Walter Cronkite, who was arriving or leaving,' Mrs. Crawford said.
'He was really proud of his inspection work on the highways,' she said.
She and her husband traveled extensively, to all but four of the United States, and owned a number of recreational boats over the years, Mrs. Crawford said.
